School of Dentistry Alumni Society Committees

Fundraising Committee

The Fundraising Committee of the School of Dentistry Alumni Society Board identifies strategies to raise funds for SODAS activities. Committee members are responsible for identifying solicitation strategies, contacting alumni, and writing letters.

The committee consists of a chair, two to three board members, one of whom should be the secretary/treasurer, and advisory members including a representative from the School of Dentistry Development Office. The committee meets at the discretion of the chair and is typically once in the fall/winter prior to February.

Golf Classic Committee

The Golf Classic Committee of the School of Dentistry Alumni Society Board is responsible for organizing and carrying out the annual golf tournament. Members of this committee are responsible for organizing the logistics of the tournament, securing sponsors and door prizes, providing input into the solicitation strategies, connecting with sponsors, and identifying ideas to recruit participants. Members must also commit to volunteering on the day of the tournament.

The committee consists of a chair, members and advisory members that include SODAS board members, members of the SOD staff, and other interested students or alumni who are members of the alumni society.

Honors Committee

The Honors Committee of the School of Dentistry Alumni Society Board is responsible for presenting the Distinguished Dental and Dental Hygiene Awards annually. This includes placing the call for nominations, reviewing the nominations, selecting the recipients and presenting the awards.

The meeting schedule is up to the discretion of the sitting chair and may include a meeting with the alumni director and/or a meeting of committee members (in person or via conference call). The call for nominations is sent out early Fall and nominations are due in December. The committee votes and selects recipients in January. Each year, the award is presented the following April at the Dean’s Recognition Reception at the Star of the North meeting.

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee of the School of Dentistry Alumni Society Board is responsible for the positive promotion of the School of Dentistry Alumni Society. This committee conducts efforts to recruit new members, encourage members with expiring memberships to renew or sign up as life members, and improve the perceived value of membership. Regular marketing strategies include the alumni booth at the Star of the North meeting once annually, the SODAS table at Clinical Grand Rounds monthly, and membership information on the School of Dentistry’s alumni website. Additional activities may also include display of membership materials in the alumni office and at all continuing dental education sessions, membership appeals created in partnership with the University of Minnesota Alumni Association, the promotion of membership at regional SOD alumni receptions and events as appropriate, and the solicitation of student memberships.

The committee consists of a chair, a minimum of 3 members and advisory members that include SODAS board members, members of the SOD staff, and other interested students or alumni who are members of the alumni society. The meeting schedule is up to the discretion of the chair and typically includes one meeting in the fall and one meeting in the spring which may take place via conference call or in person.

Student/Alumni Engagement Committee

The Student/Alumni Engagement Committee of the School of Dentistry Alumni Society Board is responsible for identifying opportunities to engage students and alumni in programs and activities that enhance the student experience and add value to alumni membership. Working in collaboration with Office of Alumni Relations & Community Engagement, the Office of Student Affairs, and the Office of Continuing Dental Education and other organizations, this committee facilitates programmatic activities based on current student and alumni needs and interests.

The committee consists of a chair, members and advisory members that include SODAS board members, members of the SOD staff, and other interested students or alumni who are members of the alumni society.

Board Development Committee

The Board Development Committee of the School of Dentistry Alumni Society Board is responsible for ensuring the future viability of the School of Dentistry Alumni Society by finding, evaluating and developing board members and cultivating their leadership as officers of the board.

The committee is chaired by the immediate past president of the board. Other members include the three other officers of the board, the president, vice president and secretary/treasurer. The committee meets at the discretion of the chair and is typically once in the fall and once in the spring and also communicates via email.
