Graduate of the Certificate Program in Contemporary Restorative & Esthetic Dentistry in 2007
Where is he today?
Dr. Ted Murray, a full-time dentist from Dubuque, Iowa, completed the Certificate Program in Contemporary Restorative and Esthetic Dentistry from the University of Minnesota in November of 2007. When he began the Level I program in 1998, his intent was not to complete the Certificate Program (Levels I-III) or to change the way he practiced dentistry, but rather to visit his daughter who was attending the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. “Not much had changed in the way I treated patients since graduating from the University of Iowa in 1977, I was just doing a lot more dentistry a lot faster.”
However, shortly after enrolling in the Level I esthetic program he quit doing amalgams and developed an esthetic practice. “I learned how to do direct and indirect resins properly and how to design smiles and carry out design changes, including soft tissue modifications.” He also sold his office—building a new state-of-the-art office to go along with his change in practice style. “My practice today sees a lot fewer patients and does more comprehensive esthetic dentistry on fewer patients per day. I am comfortable doing anything from simple smile makeovers to complex cases including full mouth reconstruction. It is a lot more fun going to work than it used to be.”
His professional development has continued on many fronts. He continued to pursue continuing education from many venues including the University of Minnesota. “The University of Minnesota Certificate Program offered a unique opportunity and challenge to learn from a wide array of teachers that were based in dental education and research institutions as well as private practice and industry. This format offered a very broad exposure to the field of esthetic dentistry.”
Dr. Murray also became an active member of the Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) and began attending their national meetings where he built a network of colleagues who were interested in similar professional goals. During the Certificate Program he elected to conduct research on restoring a meth mouth case with direct resins. His case won the “Gold Medal” and “Best of Show” awards at the (AACD) annual meeting. The innovative paper was also published in the 2007 Fall Issue of the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry.
Dr. Murray has attained Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) as well as Accreditation status from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). He is one of only a handful of dentists to have attained both awards. In addition, he has been asked to serve as an AACD Examiner and Mentor as well as elected to the Nominations and Leadership Development Committee of AACD.
“The Certificate Program at the University of Minnesota was a turning point for me professionally and opened the door to self-examination of how I was practicing dentistry vs. how I should practice dentistry. I chose to embrace the opportunity for a new practice vision.”
