Are you thinking of re-entering clinical practice and need to refresh your clinical skills? Are you currently in practice but would benefit from individual help with instrumentation, radiographic techniques and other aspects of treatment?

This powerfully blended online and patient-based continuing dental education program will give you the confidence to re-enter dental hygiene practice or simply build on your existing knowledge base and patient treatment skills. You will obtain up-to-date and clinically relevant information along with the skills required for traditional dental hygiene practice today. The program has been revised to maximize the time you will spend treating patients under the guidance of supportive and experienced dental hygiene clinicians/instructors at the School of Dentistry. The revised format includes online learning activities, traditional classroom instruction and clinical participation. The online session will be available from April 11 to May 8, 2016, allowing you to prepare in advance for the face-to-face classroom instruction and multiple patient treatment sessions.

Through online modules and classroom instruction, you will learn how to:

  • determine which medical/dental concerns will affect your patient treatment.
  • follow HIPAA rules to protect your patients’ health information.
  • provide clinical patient assessment including oral cancer screening, probing and dental charting.
  • identify the dental caries and periodontal risk and health status of your patients.
  • follow current radiation safety guidelines and infection control protocols.
  • determine a dental hygiene appointment plan based on individual risk and current conditions.
  • select the most appropriate home care products for each patient.

You will also gain simulated hands-on and live patient experience with:

  • instrumentation (hand and ultrasonic) and maintaining instrument sharpness.
  • digital radiographs (full-mouth and bite-wings).
  • other routine protocols, including medical history evaluation and patient charting using an electronic dental software system.
Who Should Attend

Dental hygienists who want to re-enter dental hygiene practice or who want a comprehensive review and multiple live patient experiences including everything you need to know for daily dental hygiene practice.

Educational Methods

The online component includes video lectures, demonstrations, and quizzes to help assess your understanding of the material. Faculty support will be available as you work through the online modules.

The hands-on clinical component includes illustrated lectures, discussion, demonstration, preclinical simulation and patient treatment. All supplies, patients and instruments will be provided.
