Bio Statement

Ms. Lenton is Director of the Oral Health Clinical Research Center at the University of Minnesota. She is also a member of the Division of TMD and Orofacial Pain in the Department of Diagnostic and Biological Sciences in the School of Dentistry at the University of Minnesota. Since joining the Oral Health Research Center in 1989, Ms. Lenton has served as Study Examiner, Project Coordinator, Principal or Co-Principal Investigator on grant or contract funded research for over 30 clinical research studies. Her thesis project resulted in the development of a pre-calibration training manual for examiners responsible for measuring periodontal indices in clinical trials.

Ms. Lenton has authored/co-authored several publications and presented the results at several national and international meetings. She has served as consultant to train periodontal examiners for centers throughout the United States. She is a member of several professional organizations including the International Association of Dental Research/American Association of Dental Research and the International Society for Breath Odor Research.

Ms. Lenton has visited and presented at a number of Universities both domestically and abroad. She participates in the Colgate Leadership Forum and has been invited to lecture in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Germany.

Research Interests

Developing standardized training and calibration methods for periodontal examiners, sensory judges, and examiners who perform the Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC) examination for patients with temporo-mandibular joint-disorder (TMJ-D).

The etiology, assessment, and treatment options for the management of breath odor.

Oral inflammation and its relationship to systemic health.

Oral health-related quality of life.


Graduated with Distinction, University of Minnesota.

Completed Honors Project examining the use of "Inquiry" in education.

First recipient of the "Ione Jackson Scholarship Award for Excellence in Education".
