Bio Statement

Dr. Berthold received his initial training in Sweden graduating from Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden in 1967 with a DDS (LDS) degree and later received his PhD, and the rank of specialist in Oral Prosthetics. He moved to University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine 1979 and received a DMD degree in 1983. He was appointed Assistant Professor of Restorative Dentistry, University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine in 1983 and promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 1987 and to Professor in 1993. He was in 1999 appointed chairperson of the Department of Community Oral Health and later held the position as Chair of the Department of Preventive and Restorative Sciences. He has practiced dentistry in Stockholm, Sweden, Philadelphia and New York City.

He also held the position as Associate Dean of International Relations between 1990 and 2005. He directed the PENN PASS program for 19 years, a program for internationally educated dentists. In addition, he served as Director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Oral Infectious Diseases: Education, Research, Care and Access from 1997 until July 2005. In this position, he was in 2002 invited to testified in Congress to the Human Rights Caucus on Noma. In the academic year 2005/06 Dr. Berthold was Technical Officer at WHO Oral Health Program in Geneva, Switzerland.

He moved to University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 2006 as tenured Professor. He is currently Head of Community Oral Health, and Director of International Affairs and the Program for Advanced Standing Students (UMN PASS). He is also Adjunct Professor in the Division of Environmental Health at the School of Public Health.

His past research interests have been in the ultra structure of oral microorganisms and the oral environment, and oral HIV disease. More recently he has been working on access to care issues in underserved communities and in developing countries, and advanced simulation technology in oral health education. He lectures frequently both locally and globally on his past and current research interests, on oral health education, global oral health, and advanced simulation technology in oral health education.

His publications include his doctoral thesis, 1 book, 5 book chapters, 54 original articles in peer-reviewed journals and 63 abstracts.

Dr. Berthold has served as an accreditation consultant for many international dental schools i.e Sweden, France, Belarus, Greece, and Kuwait. He is currently a consultant for the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA), Department for Higher Education and Scientific Research, United Arab Emirates (UAE) since 2005.
