Bio Statement

Dr. Myers is an Associate Professor in the Department of Diagnostic and Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. As Director of the NIDCR funded TMJ Implant Repository, she has been instrumental in creating a facility to collect, properly process, and archive biological specimens, including blood, TMJ tissues and implants. She is responsible for managing and directing all laboratory operations including regulatory compliance, quality control, and the implementation and supervision of laboratory technology and intricate research procedures. Dr. Myers is a member of numerous professional organizations, including The International Society of Biological and Environmental Repositories, American Academy of Orofacial Pain, American Academy of Oral Medicine, International/American Academy of Dental Research and American Dental Education Association.

Dr. Myers teaches in the undergraduate programs in Dentistry and Dental Hygiene where she has been the recipient of teaching awards. She regularly contributes to graduate dental education and has presented numerous continuing dental education courses to dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants. Dr. Myers has a track record of mentoring students, including undergraduate students in the School of Dentistry Summer Research Program, and high school students in the District 281 Mentor Connection and Minority High School Student Research Apprentice programs.

Dr. Myers' professional service in dentistry has extended through all aspects of this discipline. Her clinical training and work experiences include dental assisting, dental hygiene, dentistry and oral pathology. She has experience in forensic dentistry and is a member of the Minnesota Disaster Dental Identification Team.

Dr. Myers has visited and presented at a number of Universities abroad. She participated in the Canada Mozambique Dental Project funded by the Canadian International Development Agency. She was an advisory board member on this project and twice traveled to Mozambique, Africa to serve in a School for Primary Oral Health care workers and supervise field research projects.

Research Interests

Identifying and characterizing gender-related biologic factors that may predispose women to develop TMDs or related orofacial pain conditions.

Identifying how cellular, humoral, genetic and neuroendocrine/hormonal factors are associated with individual responses to alloplastic implant materials.

Identifying and developing methods to investigate the histopathology of TMJ tissues associated with implant wear debris and foreign body reactions.

Emphasis of the work:
The mission of this National registry and repository is to 1) collect clinical data, removed TMJ implants, and biological specimens from patients with TMJ disorders and 2) provide the clinical data, retrieved implant material, and well-characterized biological specimens to researchers.

Impact or significance of project:
This registry and repository is unique and the first for human TMJ disorders and implants in the nation and world. US Congressional hearings on TMJ implants and patient advocacy groups led to the creation of this important resource by the NIH. The registry and repository have the potential to stimulate research in TMJ disorders and implants, ultimately improving treatment outcomes.
