Brief Biographical Data:


Dr. Shuman joined the School of Dentistry faculty in 1989 and directs the Oral Health Services for Older Adults (Geriatrics) Program ( http://www.dentistry.umn.edu/prosstudent/advanced_programs/grad_geriatrics.html). In addition to his University positions, he also serves as the Dental Director for both the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation's Senior Dental Program ( http://www.wilder.org/programs/OlderAdults/DentalProgram.html) and for Presbyterian Homes of Arden Hills and Roseville, where he oversees the clinical training in geriatrics and maintains his clinical practice. He also directs the school's nationally recognized continuing education program in long-term care dentistry, "The Miniresidency in Nursing Home Care for the Dental Team." Dr. Shuman's research and publications have focused on dentistry in long-term care, economics and utilization of geriatric dental care, ethical and legal issues in the care of special patient populations, and medical issues affecting the dental care of older adults. Dr. Shuman served on the board of directors of the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry for 10 years and was president of that organization from 1998-99. He has also served as a board member of the Federation of Special Care Organizations in Dentistry and Secretary-Treasurer of the Minnesota Section of the American Association for Dental Research. He currently serves on the Minnesota Department of Human Services' Dental Access Advisory Committee.
