She spent a good deal of her career in dental research, but she has had a long-standing interest in the field of virtual reality and incorporating simulation technology into educational curricula. Under her leadership as Academic Dean at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (1997-2005), the school became the first to incorporate virtual reality-based simulation clinics into its curriculum. Dr. Buchanan is an ADA accreditation consultant which she's been doing since 1995 and has been independently conducting Mock Site Accreditation visits for since 1997.

She served for 22 years in the military (in the National Guard and Army reserves) and attained the rank of lieutenant colonel in the National Guard. In 2003 she was deployed to run dental clinics in Bosnia and Germany. She came to the University of Minnesota in 2005 excited about her new "deployment" here because of "a visionary and enthusiastic dean and the quality of the school." The school is benefiting greatly from Buchanan's blend of experience, virtual curriculum knowledge and accreditation expertise.
