Periodontal regeneration as well as bacterial and genetic risk factors association with periodontitis.

Extracrevicular Invasion by Periodontal Pathogens. NIH/NIDCR R01-DE1214-01, 07/01/01-06/30/06. Total direct costs $1,000,000. PI: Joel Rudney (10% effort clinical investigator).

Double-Blind, Controlled, Parallel-Arm, Pivotal Human Clinical Trial to Evaluate the Safety and Effectiveness of TCP Plus for the Treatment of Periodontal Bone Defects, 05/01/02-07/01/05. BioMimetic Pharmaceuticals. Amount awarded $95,000. Principal Investigator: James E. Hinrichs (20% effot in 2002, 10% effort in 2003-2005).

Brief Biographical Data:


Dr. Hinrichs co-authored 21 articles in referred journals and one chapter in a periodontal textbook. He participated in 16 funded research projects while serving as Principal Investigator for 6 of these projects. The research focus has involved clinical diagnostic parameters for periodontal disease including analysis of microbiology, gingival crevicular fluid, subgingival blood flow and more recently periodontal bone regeneration via recombinant human platelet-derived grown factor-BB. He's had the privilege of participating in the 1989, 1996 and 2003 World Workshop in Periodontics as sponsored by the American Academy of Periodontology to author consensus papers on the current state of Periodontics as well as where the field will go in the next decade. As a member of the American Academy of Periodontology's Research Science and Therapy Committee, he co-authored 8 position papers to help set the standards for the profession. He has co-authored 24 abstracts on research projects and has served as a reviewer for the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry as well the Journal of the American Dental Association.
