Research Area / Interests:

 

Clinical Care
  1. Neuropathic orofacial pains, such as trigeminal neuralgia and deafferentation pain (a.k.a atypical odontalgia)
  2. Orofacial pain associated with multiple surgeries, included pain associated with failed TMJ implants like Proplast® & Sialastic®
  3. Headache management, including tension-type, migraine, paroxysmal hemicrania, cluster and other autonomic cephalalgias
  4. TMD pain and jaw dysfunction

Teaching

  1. Differential diagnosis of orofacial pains, such as non-dental reasons for toothache
  2. Clinical pharmacotherapy of the management of orofacial pain

Research

  1. Epidemiological aspects of tooth pain association with dental procedures, especally root canal therapy
  2. Functional imaging of chronic orofacial pain conditions

Brief Biographical Data:

 

Dr. Nixdorf is a 1996 graduate of the University of Alberta, Faculty of Dentistry. Along with completing a residency in hospital dentistry, Dr. Nixdorf completed a Master of Science degree at the Ohio State University. He then completed an Anesthesia fellowship at Johns Hopkins University and an Orofacial Pain fellowship at the University of Alberta. Currently he is an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota in the Division of TMD/Orofacial Pain. His clinical interests include the diagnosis and management of headache and neuropathic pains, while his research interests are medication treatment options for orofacial pains as well as the understanding the interaction between headache and TMD. Dr. Nixdorf is a Diplomate of both the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology (NDBA) and the American Board of Orofacial Pain (ABOP). He severed a 5-year term as an oral board examiner, with the last year being the Chair of the Examination Council for the ABOP.
