Application Information

The application process varies for each type of fellow. Follow the links below for more information. All predoctoral and DDS/PhD fellows must be U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents. Non-citizen dentists holding valid dental degrees from accredited institutions who wish to pursue a PhD or postdoctoral training may be considered for MinnCResT fellowships. Postdocs who are not dentists must by U.S. citizens or permanent residents. When relevant, U.S. citizenship or permanent U.S. resident status must be held at the time of application.

How to apply
  • DDS/PhD Fellows

    DDS/PhD Fellows must separately apply to the Graduate School for admission to the PhD program in Oral Biology and the School of Dentistry for admission to the DDS program. Applicants must also submit a separate application to the MinnCResT program for a fellowship, which provides stipends for tuition, fees, health insurance, and research-related supplies and travel.

    Graduate School
    Apply online here. Students whose first language is not English must submit TOEFL scores as part of the application. Applicants to the DDS/PhD program may submit a recent DAT score in lieu of the GRE. Three letters of recommendation are required. While application may be made at any time of the year, entry into the program in the Fall Semester is recommended. For maximum consideration for financial assistance, applications should be submitted by November 1 (for Fall Semester enrollment). See the Graduate Program in Oral Biology for more information.

    School of Dentistry
    Applicants must submit applications to both the AADSAS and the School of Dentistry. The Dental Admissions Test (DAT) is required. Applications are considered by the School of Dentistry on a rolling basis and it is advantageous to submit an early application (by September 1). See the DDS Program for more information.

    MinnCResT Fellowship
    We expect there to be one DDS/PhD fellowship available for Fall 2015; APPLICATIONS ARE DUE DECEMBER 1, 2014. You may apply via email (PREFERRED)  or U.S. mail. Please submit the following:

    • Application Cover Sheet (Word document)
    • Cover Letter. Applicants must identify a research interest and a potential mentor in the cover letter. Be sure to address how your research will support the MinnCResT Program's mission.
    • Your Statement of goals (1 to 2 pages)
    • CV or Resume may be e-mailed directly to mncrest@umn.edu
    • Identify a question of considerable interest in contemporary science. Propose an experiment or several experiments that could answer that question (1 to 2 pages)
    • Three letters of recommendation (sent directly from the evaluators)
    • Official transcripts from all universities/colleges attended. If you plan to submit a University of Minnesota transcript, please contact us. We can likely save you the cost of an official transcript.

  • Postdoctoral Fellows

    Applicants for post-doctoral fellowships apply to the MinnCResT Program for a fellowship, which provides stipends for tuition, fees, health insurance, and research-related supplies and travel. No other applications are required. Applicants must identify a research interest and a potential mentor in the cover letter. Applicants are strongly encouraged to meet with the potential mentor prior to applying for a fellowship.

    Applications are reviewed twice each year (occasionally more often if funding slots become available) if funding slots are available. One postdoctoral fellowship is currently available; applications are due October 15,  2014.  The next open slots are expected in 2016. Contact the MinnCResT Program office for more information regarding the availability of postdoctoral fellowships.

    Applications may be made via email or U.S. mail. Your application must include the following:

    • Application Cover Sheet (Word document)
    • Cover Letter. Be sure to address how your research will support the MinnCResT Program's mission.

  • Predoctoral Fellows

    Fellowships for pre-doctoral fellows are extremely limited. We encourage you to contact us to verify future availability and application deadlines.

    Applicants for pre-doctoral fellowships apply to the MinnCResT Program for a fellowship, which provides a stipend, tuition, fees, health insurance, and research-related supplies and travel. Predoctoral applicants must be admitted to and enrolled in a PhD program in the University of Minnesota's Graduate School prior to applying for a MinnCResT fellowship. Applicants must identify a research interest and mentor in the cover letter.

    Preference is given to applicants who have passed their preliminary exams and completed all coursework.

    Applications may be made via email or U.S. mail. Please submit the following:

    • Application Cover Sheet (Word document)
    • Cover Letter. Be sure to address how your research will support the MinnCResT Program's mission.
    • Your Statement of goals (1 to 2 pages)
    • CV or Resume
    • Identify a question of considerable interest in contemporary science. Propose an experiment or several experiments that could answer that question (1 to 2 pages)
    • Three letters of recommendation (sent directly from the evaluators)
    • Official transcripts from all universities/colleges attended.

  • International Dentist Fellows

    These fellowships are reserved for non-U.S. citizen dentists who have valid dental degrees from an accredited institution (within or outside the U.S.) and now wish to pursue basic science research training through a PhD program or postdoctoral appointment. Applicants who wish to pursue a PhD must submit two (2) applications: one to the Graduate School for admission to the PhD program in Oral Biology and one to the MinnCResT program for a fellowship, which provides stipends for tuition, fees, health insurance, and research-related supplies and travel.  Applicants who already have a PhD and seek postdoctoral training need only submit the MinnCResT fellowship application (below).

    Graduate School

    Applicants seeking a PhD must apply online here. Students whose first language is not English must submit TOEFL scores as part of the application. The GRE is required; NBDE scores are not acceptable. Three letters of recommendation are required. While application may be made at any time of the year, entry into the program in the Fall Semester is strongly recommended.     MinnCResT Fellowship

    International Dentist Fellowships are unavailable in 2014-15. Please contact the MinnCResT Program staff to verify future availability and application deadlines.

    Applicants must submit the following materials via e-mail:

    • Application Cover Sheet (Word document)
    • Cover Letter addressing how your research will support the MinnCResT Program’s mission. Applicants must also identify a research interest and a potential mentor in the cover letter.
    • Statement of Goals: 1 to 2 pages addressing your research ambitions and how a MinnCResT Fellowship will assist you.
    • CV or Resume
    • Research essay: Identify a question of considerable interest in contemporary science. Propose an experiment or several experiments that could answer that question. (1 to 2 pages)
    • A written statement granting the MinnCResT Program permission to access your Oral Biology PhD application and the transcripts contained therein.
