2007 Midwest Regional Student Research Conference

studentsDuring the weekend of April 14th, thirteen University of Minnesota School of Dentistry students participated in the Midwest Dental Research Conference at The University of Iowa College of Dentistry in Iowa City, Iowa. The students are all part of the Summer Research Fellowship Program, which provides School of Dentistry students with the opportunity to do research under the guidance of a faculty mentor.  According to Dr. Joel Rudney, Director of the Summer Research Program, “a meeting like this gives our student researchers an opportunity to be part of a larger community, and to see that their work is valued and appreciated on a national level.” Dean Patrick Lloyd, who spoke at the conference, complimented the participants and their mentors on the range of topics, their depth of understanding, appreciation for rigorous methodology, skill and confidence during presentations.

This year’s School of Dentistry participants were:

  • Jeremy R. Johnson – Familial Gigantiform Cementoma: Gene Profile using Microarray Analysis
  • Heather Horton – Integration of HIV-1 into Oral Keratinocytes
  • Tracy Grossman – Visualization of Bacterial Invasion from Biofilm into Epithelial Cells
  • Amy Chi – The Role of Osteoclasts in Regulation Osteoblast Differentiation
  • Matthew Larson – Three-Dimensional Examination of Occlusal Stability in 2-week Clinical Study
  • James Jenders  - Calprotectin inhibits Candida albicans penetration of oral epithelial cells
  • Lam Tu – Hygroscopic Expansion in a Tooth Restored with a Resin Modified Glass Ionomer
  • Katie Daniels – Expression and Role of Matrix Gla Protein in Osteoblast Differentiation and Mineralization
  • Jamie Evavold – Search of Genes Encoding PGEQGPK-motif in Streptococcus Sanguis 133-79
  • Alice Huang – Remineralization of Eroded Teeth Using CPP-ACP Paste
  • Mohammad Salad – Endothelial Cells Can Form Capillary like Structures in the Presence of Osteoblasts
  • Andrew Soderholm – Assessment of Facial Proportions by 3D and 2D Photography versus Direct Measurement
  • Robert Chalgren – Shear Bond Strength of an esthetic Orthodontic Bracket Upon Treatment Variation

The Midwest Regional Student Research Conference rotates among Midwestern dental schools, including Minnesota, Iowa, Marquette, Illinois-Chicago, Southern Illinois (Carbondale), Missouri-Kansas City, Creighton, Nebraska, and Colorado. Students present their research using an oral or poster format in a non-competitive environment designed to foster collaboration.  In addition to the U of M students, this years conference participants included students from the dental schools at the University of Iowa, Marquette University, University of Illinois, Southern Illinois University, University of Missouri-Kansas City and the University of Colorado.

The 2008 Conference will be hosted by the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. Our students will be hosting our visitors from other schools, and presenting their research from the summer of 2007. Mentors are still needed for this summer. Faculty who are interested in this rewarding experience should contact Dr. Rudney (jrudney@umn.edu).
