2008 Midwest Regional Dental Student Research Conference2008 Midwest Regional Dental Student Research Conference
The School of Dentistry played host to about 50 attendees of the 2008 Midwest Regional Dental Student Research Conference, on Saturday April 19. This annual conference brings together student researchers from dental schools throughout the Midwest. The schools enjoying Minnesota hospitality this year included the University of Colorado, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the University of Manitoba, the University of Illinois-Chicago, and the University of Iowa.
Our visitors were treated to outstanding presentations by our own Dr. Jim Swift, the immediate past president of ADEA, and Dr Sumita Mitra, from 3M. Our Research Fellows guided them through highlights of our school including the SIM clinic (demonstrated by Dr. Heather Conrad), the Center for Contemporary Dentistry (demonstrated by Claire Mielke, D4), the Comprehensive Care Clinic, and the artificial mouth (demonstrated by Maria Pintado).
Most importantly, this conference gave student researchers from all participating schools the chance to meet and learn from each other, during the course of three research poster sessions. "Students like these are essential to the future of academic dentistry," said Dr. Joel Rudney, who organized this event with the able assistance of Ms. Ann Hagen, the Assistant Director of MinnCResT, and all 16 of our summer research fellows.
"I couldn't be more proud of our students!" said Dr. Rudney. "They presented excellent posters, and made our visitors feel very welcome. I'm sure this experience will stay with them for the rest of the careers."
