School of Dentistry at the American Dental Education Association Annual Session

Members of the University of Minnesota's School of Dentistry recently participated in the American Dental Education Association's  (ADEA) Annual Session, held March 14-18 in Phoenix, Arizona. Highlights of the session include the following:

Dr. Bryan Michalowicz, Professor and Erwin Schaffer Chair in Periodontal Research, Division of Periodontology, became the third faculty member from the School of Dentistry to complete the year-long ADEA Leadership Institute. The program is designed to develop the nation’s most promising individuals at academic dental institutions to become future leaders in dental and higher education. The program teaches team-building and mentoring, among other leadership skills, and offers instruction in legislative and administrative techniques. Past School of Dentistry faculty who have completed the program include Drs. Igor Pesun and Pamela Hughes.

Dr. James Swift, Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, was awarded the ADEA Distinguished Service Award, an award that recognizes significant contributions to education, research, and the American Dental Educational Association.

First-year School of Dentistry dental hygiene student Brenda Armstrong was selected as one of the recipients of the 2009 ADEA/CrestOral-B Scholarships. The scholarship supports dental hygiene students who are pursuing education beyond an associate degree and who have an interest in an academic career.

Department of Primary Dental Care Associate Program Director Dr. Karin Quick was invited to participate in the ADEA/Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products Enid A. Neidle Scholar-in-Residence Program for Women. This is a cumulative three-month experience at the ADEA office in Washington, DC. While in Washington, DC, the scholar will gain a distinct perspective on issues facing women faculty including promotion, advancement and tenure policies; entry and re-entry into the workforce; child care and elder care; women’s health, work patterns, and advanced education and research opportunities; and other gender-related issues.

Dean Patrick Lloyd gave a presentation about the impact of continuing dental education on dental schools.
