Center for Contemporary Dentistry Renovation
If you haven’t been to the 7th floor lately, you have missed the renovation going on in the School of Dentistry’s Center for Contemporary Dentistry. In the time since the clinic was built in 2001, the school has determined that it is not feasible to reorganize a curriculum and assign faculty and staff to teach in a clinic that can accommodate only two students at a time. So, after much discussion with Patterson Dental Supply, Inc., the expansion began in early April. About 120 additional square feet will be added, which will create enough new space to increase the number of operatories from two to five. Patterson Dental Supply will equip the new facility. And by the end of May 2006, construction should be done and all of the new equipment will be installed. At that time, the school can start recruiting faculty for the clinic.
For students, the plan is to have a clinical rotation for each senior dental and dental hygiene student – ideally two weeks. They will have an opportunity to work with the latest dental technology – digital radiography, electronic patient record, computer-based patient education materials, etc. Additionally, dental students will have their Dental Auxiliary Utilization (DAU) experience in the clinic.
To support the new program, the school is recruiting a dentist to serve as clinic director. The school has run advertisements in the Twin Cities newspapers and the state dental journal looking for someone with an interest and experience in advanced dental practice technologies who can spend two to three days per week working with students. This person will teach students how to use the technologies in the clinic and how to care for patients with the support of a dental assistant. To round out the rest of the week, students will work with two or three part-time faculty working in the clinic - all dentists practicing in the community who are using these advanced technologies in their own offices. This way, students will learn from those who use this type of equipment daily and who practice four-handed dentistry.
To commemorate the renovation, the school is planning a school-wide rededication ceremony. Representatives from Patterson Dental Supply Inc. are expected to be there, as will senior administrators from the AHC.
