Dean Patrick Lloyd to pursue new career
Patrick M. Lloyd, D.D.S., M.S., dean of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, has accepted a position as dean of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry and director of dentistry for The Ohio State University Medical Center. His appointment is effective August 1, 2011.
In a letter to students, staff and faculty, Lloyd shared news of his appointment and described his seven years at the University of Minnesota as personally and professionally gratifying and marked by unprecedented student, staff and faculty accomplishments. He noted the school’s success in creating a new advanced simulation clinic for educating pre-doctoral dental students. “The school pulled together with the University, corporate sponsors, alumni, and faculty and staff to create the most comprehensive simulation clinic of any Big Ten campus. We are recognized nationwide as a leader in dental education.”
His reference was to the simulation clinic, the school’s leadership role and 2010 Gies Award for Outstanding Vision from the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) for advancing new standards for initial licensure of dental graduates, and a visit in May by ADEA leadership. “ADEA representatives came to Minnesota two weeks ago to review one of our education programs as the ‘model’ for integrated education initiatives going forward,” he said.
Lloyd also noted, “Our students are finding rewarding career opportunities in communities throughout the state and our researchers are aggressively pursuing new sources of funding and realizing impressive success in that effort.” He also acknowledged that the dental school hired 40 new faculty members in the last several years, 42% of them women. According to Lloyd, “Our successes have been the result of remarkable collaborations and the hard work of so many.”
“As it is with much in life,” he said, “the decision to accept this new opportunity was a difficult one. Although I look forward to a new career challenge, I will always be grateful beyond words for the opportunity to be your dean, to meet and get to know you, and to be a part of this great dental school.”
University of Minnesota Provost Tom Sullivan is in consultation with President Robert Bruininks, President-designate Eric Kaler, and Aaron Friedman, vice president of health sciences and dean of the University of Minnesota Medical School, to insure an effective and successful appointment of an interim dean and ultimately a search committee.
Lloyd’s forthcoming transition to The Ohio State University was the subject of a recent Minnesota Daily story; read it here: http://www.mndaily.com/2011/05/04/dean-patrick-lloyd-leave-us-dental-school
