Minnesota State Fair

Record numbers of School of Dentistry volunteers were on-hand to meet and greet fairgoers and distribute toothbrushes at the 2012 Minnesota State Fair on Wednesday, August 29. Children who visited the dental school exhibit in the Crossroads Building received a “Super Tooth” coloring/game book and sat at tables to draw, while adults completed a nine-question quiz testing their knowledge about oral health.

Quiz takers learned about dental emergencies and baby bottle tooth decay, that cavities are caused by bacteria that can be transferred between parent and infant, that oral infections are linked to serious general health issues, that dry mouth caused by medications increases the risk of tooth decay in older adults, and that even denture-wearers need to see a dentist. They also learned that School of Dentistry patient clinics are open to the public and provide comprehensive dental services for children and adults.

The dental school was one of 23 University of Minnesota Academic Health Center (AHC) schools, programs and centers that helped staff an AHC exhibit throughout the 12 day fair.
