Dr. Karl Self to Head Up Program in Dental Therapy
Dr. Karl Self has accepted an invitation to serve as the School of Dentistry’s Director of the Division and Program in Dental Therapy, effective January 4, 2010.
Dr. Self brings with him a strong commitment to integrated health care, diversity, and community partnerships to meet the needs of the underserved, and is recognized within the public health community for his involvement in crafting public health care policy. He has held faculty appointments in both clinical and pre-clinical instruction at the School of Dentistry and is currently a Group Leader in the Comprehensive Care Clinic. Before that, he was the Executive Director of the Community-University Health Care Center (CUHCC).
As a member of the delegation that visited established dental therapy education programs in Canada, New Zealand and England, Dr. Self learned first-hand about how those programs fit into their respective delivery systems and what might –- or what might not be –- transferable to the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry's program. He contributed thoughtfully to discussions about the development of the U-M School of Dentistry’s ground-breaking program and is eager to apply his talents, expertise and passion to the academic, clinical and professional development of the school’s dental therapy students as complementary members of the dental team.
Dr. Self received his dental degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and an MBA from the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management.
