The School of Dentistry has a new Student Dress Code and Guide for Personal Appearance. The document was developed over the last few months by a working group composed of class officers from each dental and dental hygiene class plus Laura Boland (Director of Student Services) Drs. Judith Buchanan (Assoc. Dean of Academic Affairs) and Robert Hirsch (Assoc. Dean of Clinical Affairs) and Dean Lloyd.
The group held a total of five, hour-long meetings, each with about 12-15 people around the table. Discussion focused on everything from the uniform color of the scrubs to be worn in clinics to the length of t-shirt sleeves that can be worn under the scrubs to the kind of shoes that will be worn. Class officers were involved in each draft of the document, and a consensus agreement was reached last week on final wording that reflected give and take on the part of all participants.
All agreed that the guidelines help the school project an image of professionalism that will engender patient confidence and is consistent with the standards of excellence set by the University, the School of Dentistry, and the dental profession. The document was also reviewed and approved by both the Council of Chairs and the Faculty Consultative Committee. Students received the new dress code and personal appearance guide the first week of August; it will be effective when classes start in September 2006.
