Former School of Dentistry dean, Richard Oliver, receives Outstanding Achievement Award
Dr. Richard C. Oliver, dean-emeritus of the University of Minnesota's School of Dentistry, was awarded the University of Minnesota Outstanding Achievement Award on June 19.
The Outstanding Achievement Award is given to a graduate who has attained distinction in their chosen fields or professions, or in public service, and who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and leadership on a community, state, national, or international level.
Dr. Oliver earned his doctorate of dental surgery (D.D.S.) degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1953. The Minneapolis native later studied advanced dental education at the University of Southern California and earned a M.S. degree in periodontology at Loma Linda University, where he later served as director of the Post Graduate Periodontics Program.
In 1967-1968, he was a Fulbright Research Professor at the Royal Dental College in Aarhus, Denmark and was dean of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry from 1977 to 1986. He has given numerous invited presentations at meetings of the American Dental Association, American Association of Dental Schools, American Academy of Periodontology, American College of Dentists, National Institute of Dental Research, universities, local dental organizations in California, Minnesota, and around the nation, and several international groups and institutions.
As recipient of the Outstanding Achievement Award, Dr. Oliver’s name will be engraved on the Alumni Wall of Honor located next to the McNamara Alumni Center on the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis campus.
