Medical and dental students need to learn and master health care policy. The U of M School of Dentistry is already on the right track, says a letter to the MN Daily from fourth-year dental student Kyle Holmberg.
An article by Jeff Karp (Developmental/Surgical Sci — Pediatric Dentistry) about the new University of Minnesota Pediatric Dental Clinic, Made Possible by Delta Dental of Minnesota, appeared in the November issue of Minnesota Pediatrician, the newsletter for the Minnesota Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Paul Schulz (Primary Dental Care-Outreach) discussed the Mobile Dental Clinic in a story that aired 10/15/12. See the story on WCCO-TV.
Robert Conlin (Primary Dental Care-Mobile Dental Unit) was interviewed for an article in Thief River Falls/Northern Watch TV about an area visit by the Mobile Dental Clinic.
The School of Dentistry and the Academic Health Center worked together to produce and distribute Halloween stories about cavities and tooth-healthy snacking. Dan Shaw (Developmental/Surgical Sci-Pediatric Dentistry) was quoted in a story for Yahoo News and was the online spokesperson in a separate YouTube video created for the AHC website. The video was also picked up by MinnPost.
The School of Dentistry outreach community partnerships were featured in a U of M website story as an example of how colleges, departments and units are working to reduce costs while enhancing services as part of the U’s commitment to operational excellence. Read the article.
Congratulations to Lou Mansky (Diag/Biol. Sci-IMV) who received a new R01 grant award from NIH's National Institute of General Medical Sciences: "HTLV-1 Particle Analysis and Gag Interactions".
Preliminary award data for FY2012 suggest that SOD faculty secured a small increase in the number of NIH awards while the total dollar amount will be lower than last year due to a one-time award in FY11.
Teresa Fong (Developmental/Surg. Sci.-Pediatric Dentistry) was quoted in a 7/21/12 Star Tribune article titled “Thumb sucking is a hard habit to break.”
Karl Self (Primary Dental Care-Dental Therapy) was quoted in a 7/16/12 Star Tribune article about dental therapy in Minnesota.
Third-year dental student Kyle Smith was featured in a 5/21/12 ADA News article about his efforts to raise money for Give Kids a Smile programs by biking 100 miles in the Minnesota Ironman Bike Ride. Smith raised $1,100 and will donate $550 to the School of Dentistry’s GKAS program and $550 to the ADA Foundation Give Kids a Smile Fund.
The appointment of Leon Assael as dean designate of the School of Dentistry was reported in ADA News Online and in the June 18 print edition of the newspaper. It was also reported in MDA News (June 2012).
Karl Self (Primary Dental Care-Dental Therapy) was quoted in an ABC News story (6/6/12) about Minnesota’s dental therapy program and the national discussion taking place about the profession. The story ran as a follow-up to a 6/3/12 Los Angeles Times story for which Self was interviewed but not quoted. Dental therapist Crystal Baker, a member of the School of Dentistry’s first class of dental therapist graduates, was also interviewed and quoted.
Lisa Ahmann (Primary Dental Care-Dental Hygiene) was interviewed on WCCO TV about toothpastes. The story aired on the evening news (5/9) and, again, on the morning of May 10.
Paul Schulz (Primary Dental Care-Outreach) was interviewed for an article in the Spring 2012 UCare Prime Time newsletter sent to 69,000 UCare members.
The School of Dentistry was named the WCCO Radio’s Good Neighbor of the Day on April 24. Who nominated us? We don’t know. In the past, though, we’ve been nominated by the Union Gospel Mission where our students volunteer to provide care for patients under (volunteer) faculty supervision in the UGM dental clinic.
The School of Dentistry was mentioned in a WDIO-TV story (Duluth) about a visit by the UCare Mobile Dental Unit to Cloquet to provide free dental care to five Special Olympic athletes. The article acknowledged that care was provided by faculty-supervised dental and dental hygiene students from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.
Nelson Rhodus (Diagnostic/Biol. Sci-Oral Medicine & Diagnosis) was featured in an AHC online article and blog about his research (with University of Minnesota colleagues Frank Ondrey and Tim Griffin) on biomarkers in saliva that may simplify the diagnosis of oral and throat cancer.
The Summer Research Fellowship Program and the research opportunities afforded to School of Dentistry students were spotlighted in two media stories: 1) The 5/1/12 Minnesota Daily printed a story titled “Dental students get research experience”. D3 student Kyle Holmerg was inter-viewed, as were Joel Rudney (Diagnostic/Biological Sci.) and Conrado Aparicio (Restorative Sci). 2) A similar article titled “Fellowship program grooms next-gen dental researchers” appeared in the May 3 online issue of Dr. Bicuspid. Dr. Rudney and Kyle Holmberg were both interviewed.
The Rice Regional Dental Clinic was featured in the West Central Tribune (4/4/12) as “an especially successful example of a program to prepare dentists, dental therapists and dental hygienists” in a 4/4/12 article reporting on Senator Al Franken’s visit to the clinic. The article identified the clinic as a partner-ship between the Rice Hospital and the University of Minnesota, noting that “the clinic provides rural hands-on training opportunities for students and increases access to dental care for the region’s low-income and underserved population.” Brandi Tweeter, 2011 graduate of the School of Dentistry’s Program in Dental Therapy, who was interviewed for the article.
The Minnesota Daily brought readers inside the new University of Minnesota Pediatric Dental Clinic, Made Possible by Delta Dental of Minnesota, which opened April 3. Quoted in the story are interim clinic director Dan Shaw and first-year pediatric dental resident Dan Fallon. The clinic will have its grand opening May 15.

A photo of D4 students Rachel Brown and Sam Schmidt appeared in the West Central Tribune (2/17/12) to highlight the visit of the UCare Mobile Dental Clinic to Kandiyohi County.
Vivek Thumbigere Math (Diagnostic/Biological Sci-Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) was quoted in a Dr. Bicuspid story about a University of Minnesota case-control study to evaluate the association between clinical measures of periodontal disease and the risk of developing bisphosphonate-related osteone-crosis of the jaw (BRONJ) in patients after intravenous bisphosphonate therapy. Preliminary findings conflict with the previously suggested theory that periodontal disease and poor oral hygiene increase the risk of BRONJ development.
Karl Self (Primary Dental Care-Dental Therapy) was pictured in the Harvard Dental Bulletin (Winter 2011-12) with representatives of Harvard faculty, staff and students following his presentation on the rural workforce and dental therapy.
A description of the School of Dentistry’s Program in Dental Therapy was included in an article appearing in the Winter issue of the Minnesota Department of Health newsletter Quarterly. The article included a summary of the Minnesota legislation and a brief review of the University of Minnesota and MnSCU dental therapy education programs.
The University of Minnesota Pediatric Dental Clinic, Made Possible by Delta Dental of Minnesota, was featured in the U of M Foundation publication Legacy, Winter 2012.
The School of Dentistry Alumni Society is accepting contributions for the annual Cap & Gown Graduation Fund that helps support our new graduates by underwriting their costs for cap and gown rental.
