New Fund for Student Research

A new endowed fund will support student research activities in the Division or Oral Medicine, Diagnosis, and Radiology. Mrs. Alice Yamane has established an endowed fund at the University of Minnesota Foundation in honor of her late husband, Dr. George M. Yamane. A 1950 alumnus of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, Dr. Yamane completed an internship in New York and returned to Minnesota in 1951 to pursue a graduate degree, to teach, and do research in oral medicine. He earned his Ph.D. in pathology in 1962 and was appointed professor and chair of the Division of Oral Diagnosis, Oral Medicine, and Oral Roentgenology. In 1970, he became chair of Oral Medicine and Radiology at the New Jersey Dental School where he taught for 23 years until his retirement in 1992. Returning to Minnesota, he re-joined the University of Minnesota faculty in 1994 as an adjunct professor in the Division of Oral Medicine. Dr. Yamane will be remembered as a great educator, researcher, mentor, and a significant contributor to the mission of the University of Minnesota Dental School and dental education in general.
