Third Annual "Open Wide" Open Golf Tournament
On Saturday, September 9, 2006, School of Dentistry students hit the links with area dentists, alumni, dental suppliers and others for the third annual “Open Wide Open” Golf Tournament at the Troy Burne Golf Course in Hudson, Wisconsin (home to the PGA's Nationwide tour for the last three years). The School of Dentistry’s ASDA (American Student Dental Association) chapter started the tournament three years ago to bring the worlds of dental students, area dentists, and dental suppliers together for a day of fun, golf and philanthropy. According to fourth year dental student, Mitchell Ellingson, who organized this year’s event, the Troy Burne Golf Course is a particularly appropriate venue for the “Open Wide.” It was designed by Tom Lehman, a major contributor to the Children's Cancer Research Fund - the fund supported by the SOD chapter of ASDA as its charitable cause. A donation to the Children’s Cancer Research Fund was made by ASDA following the tournament.
This year’s tournament drew 80 participants, and featured a hole-in-one competition (Toyota donated a new 2006 FJ Cruiser, but no one was able to win it) and the “Dean Lloyd Putting Academy” at the 10th hole.
First place winners were Dr. Fred Haas, Dr. Mark Souers, and fourth year SOD students, Amy Gehant, Katie Stewart, and Sean Laidig. The second place finishers (for the second year in a row) included Dr. Chris Johnson, and fourth year SOD students Kaine Stokes, Nathan Deeter, and Jon Siverson. Awards dinner speakers included Dean Lloyd; Jim Zenk, President of the Minnesota Dental Association, and a cancer survivor.
Second year student, Naomi Lane, will take over the organization of the event in the coming years. This year’s organizers wish to thank her for all of the work she did to make this year’s tournament a real success.
