Oral/Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery Fellowship Organization and Management
School of Dentistry Base and Affiliation
The program is based in the School of Dentistry. It is closely affiliated with the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview. GME funding for the program comes from Fairview and covers the fellow’s full stipend. Rotations for the fellow from other departments have been developed to create a comprehensive educational experience for the trainee. These include radiation and medical oncology, plastic reconstructive surgery, otolaryngology, speech and swallowing and pathology. The fellow will spend between 2-4 weeks of time in each rotation to augment their educational experience.
Key Program Faculty Members
In addition to Dr. Deepak Kademani, Program Director, key faculty members within this program will be Dr. Chung Lee and Dr. Priya Kumar from Radiation and Medical Oncology respectively, Dr. David Hamlar from the Division of Otorhinolaryngology, Dr. Umar Choudry from Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Dr. Michael Rohrer from Oral Pathology/Diagnostic and Biological Sciences.
The first fellow to be selected is Ketan Patel, BDS, PhD. Dr. Patel obtained his BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) at the University of Birmingham, England in 2001 and his PhD in Oral Biology with a minor in Molecular Genetics, Advance Genetics, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology and Cancer Biology at the University of Minnesota in 2007. Dr. Patel completed a two year fellowship in Oral Medicine at the University of Minnesota in 2007. He also completed a one year Internship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2008 from the University of Maryland Medical Systems and a four year Residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from the University of Maryland Medical Systems in 2012. Dr. Patel has a resident dentist license from the State of Minnesota Board of Dentistry.
