Class of 2014
Amanda Cheng received her D.M.D from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. During her dental degree, she collaborated with the Peking School of Stomatology to do research on dental devices that are used to screen for oral cancer. She has then presented her research at many national and international conferences. Amanda is also a mentor for the Harvard-New England Pre-Dental Society, which helps undergraduate students pursue their careers in dentistry. Being passionate about global health, Amanda has worked with the Pediatric AIDS Treatment Support (PATS) Project to provide dental care in Anhui China for HIV positive children, whose parents participated in paid plasma donation.
Dr. Huang received his honors B.Sc. degree from the University of Toronto in 2005 and M.Sc. in Biochemistry from the University of British Columbia in 2008. Soon after, he completed his D.D.S. degree at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine in 2012. Currently, he is pursuing post-graduate training in orthodontics and carrying out basic science research in bone biology at the University of Minnesota. He anticipates receiving his certificate in Orthodontics and Masters Degree in dentistry in 2014.
Dr. Kyra (Toulouse) Iwen was born and raised in Rochester, Minnesota. In 2002 she graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Biology and Applied Sociology from the University of Saint Thomas. She was hired by the Japan Exchange and Teaching program as an English teacher and lived in Iwakura, Japan for one year. Upon return, she attended the University of Minnesota Dental School. She earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree with distinction in 2008 and was awarded membership to the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Society. Upon graduation, she began working fulltime as a general dentist in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. Dr. Iwen was grateful to have the opportunity to provide care in a rural underserved area and gained much clinical experience for four years. In 2012 Dr. Iwen began an orthodontic residency at the University of Minnesota. She maintains active membership in the AAO, MAO, ADA, and AGD. Dr. Iwen plans to practice as a clinical orthodontist in the Twin Cities area upon graduation. Currently, she lives in Saint Paul with her much-adored husband and son.
Dr. Menjivar received her BA from Vanderbilt University in 2008. She received her DMD from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine in 2012. While in dental school, she was active in the American Student Dental Association, serving in a national capacity as Vice Chair of the Legislative Grassroots Network. As a first-year orthodontic resident, she serves her co-residents as class representative and is working to institute a series of resident-lead seminars. Originally from Wisconsin, Dr. Menjivar enjoys the opportunity to be closer to family. After completing her orthodontic residency, she plans to join her husband, an attorney, back in Connecticut.
Dr. Mueller grew up in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. After graduating from high school in 2001, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps and was stationed at Cherry Point, NC. Upon completion of his active duty service he spent two years at the US Naval Academy before receiving his Bachelors of Science in Biology from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Dr. Mueller then attended the School of Dentistry at the University of Minnesota, graduating with his DDS in May 2012. In June of the same year he started his residency in orthodontics at the University of Minnesota. In his free time Dr. Mueller enjoys playing hockey, spending time outdoors and traveling “up north”. After graduation he is hoping to enter private practice in northeastern Minnesota.
Dr. Sudit grew up in Minnetonka, Minnesota. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Biology from the University of Texas. He went on to receive his dental degree from the University of Minnesota. After practicing general dentistry for a year he then started his orthodontic specialty residency in the Division of Orthodontics at the University of Minnesota. Aside from dentistry, Dr. Sudit is a small business owner and an avid sports fan. He lives in Uptown with his wife and spoiled dog Wally. Dr. Sudit is very proud to be a part of the University of Minnesota’s program, which is committed to excellence and scientific advancement in the field of orthodontics.
Class of 2015
Originally from Ottawa, Ontario, Dr. Danae Brownrigg pursued her Bachelors of Science (Honors) degree with a major in Life Sciences at Queen’s University in nearby Kingston, Ontario. She also spent the last four years on the west coast of Canada while completing the Doctor of Dental Medicine program at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia. During this time, Dr. Brownrigg developed a strong interest in orthodontics and was involved in research involving 3D imaging of craniofacial development. She is excited to move to the United States and explore the beautiful Twin Cities area.
Dr. Gyllenhaal grew up in Glenview, IL, completed a BA in Biology at Northwestern University in 2009, and received her DDS from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry in 2013. While in dental school she ran a research study investigating early detection of root resorption for which she was awarded several honors, including the American Association for Dental Research fellowship and the American Institution of Orthodontic Research Award. She also served on her class board and was chair of the annual student dental charity ball. Kelley is very passionate about the outdoors—some of her hobbies include hiking, skiing, biking, and backpacking. She also loves to bake.
Dr. Christine Hammer was born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of St. Thomas in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry. In 2013, Dr. Hammer received her D.D.S. degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. She then began her orthodontic residency at the University of Minnesota in June of 2013. Dr. Hammer is committed to community service, and coordinated St. Paul’s Union Gospel Mission dental clinic while in dental school. She enjoys long distance running, weekends at her family’s cabin in northwestern Wisconsin, and spending time with her husband and family in Duluth. Upon completion of the orthodontic residency program, Dr. Hammer hopes to return to Duluth to practice orthodontics.
Dr. Kyle Knudsen is pleased to be a part of the graduate program in orthodontics at the University of Minnesota. Prior to residency, he graduated summa cum laude from North Dakota State University with a bachelor's degree in zoology and earned a doctor of dental surgery degree with high distinction from the University of Minnesota. In his spare time, Dr. Knudsen enjoys barefoot waterskiing, raising and showing sheep, playing saxophone and traveling. Originally from southwestern Minnesota, Dr. Knudsen eventually plans to return to a rural area to enter private practice.
Dr. Chad Larson was born in Madrid, Spain while his father was stationed there in U.S. Air Force. At one year old, his family moved to Rochester, MN where he was raised through high school. Dr. Larson went to the University of Minnesota for his undergraduate studies where he graduated in 2009 summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Science with a major in biology from the College of Biological Sciences. He then attended the School of Dentistry at his alma mater where he obtained his DDS with high distinction in 2013 and was awarded membership in the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Society. Currently, he is pursing post-graduate training in orthodontics and plans to complete a Master’s Degree. Aside from dentistry, Dr. Larson is a sports fan and enjoys spending time outdoors. Dr. Larson is happily married to his wife Caitlin, an occupational therapist, whom he met during undergrad at the U of M.
Originally from Connecticut, Dr. Schnitt received her Bachelor of Arts in Molecular Biology and Neuroscience from Kenyon College in 2006. Here she was awarded membership to the Phi Beta Kappa national honor society. In the following years, she conducted cardiac research at The Ohio State University in the Department of Surgery, Laboratory of Molecular Medicine. Her findings were published in Molecular Biology of the Cell and Cardiovascular Research. Subsequently, she attended the University of California San Francisco School of Dentistry where she affirmed her developing passion for the field of orthodontics. Dr. Schnitt earned her DDS in June 2013 and is delighted to be a current orthodontic resident at the University of Minnesota.
