Education/Academic Record
  • Official transcripts from each college or university attended
  • Undergraduate BSc degree (grade point average and applicable courses)
  • Dental school transcript, grade point average, and class rank
  • Additional degrees such as MS or PhD
  • National Board Dental Examination scores (US trained applicants only)
  • TOEFL scores (all international applicants, other than those from Canada)
  • *Minimum score of 100 for the internet-based TOEFL or 600 for the paper-based TOEFL
Honors/Publications/Research
  • Honors or scholastic distinctions
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Involvement in professional societies
  • Authored research abstract
  • Poster presentation at a scientific meeting
  • Authored or co-authored manuscript in a scientific journal
Clinical/Laboratory Experience
  • Completion of a General Practice Residency
  • Completion of an Advanced Education in General Dentistry
  • Private practice experience
  • Clinical teaching experience at a dental school
  • Prosthodontics laboratory experience
Letters of Reference
  • Three letters of reference attesting to your personal and professional qualifications
  • These may be included in sealed envelopes with your application or mailed directly to the Program Director
Personal Statement
  • 400-500 words describing your immediate and long-range professional goals, why you are interested in specializing in prosthodontics, and why you are interested in the University of Minnesota
Interview/Laboratory Exercise
  • The interview will include an exchange of questions and answers regarding the candidate’s motivation/passion/potential for pursuing specialty training in prosthodontics, a review of the curriculum and program’s goals and objectives, a tour of the facilities, observation of clinical activities, participation in a treatment planning seminar, and conversation with the residents independently.
  • A wax carving exercise is required for all interview candidates
General

While all of the above listed criteria are important, education/academic record and the interview portion of the process are more heavily weighted. During the interview, an applicant’s poise, sincerity, ability to relate to and work with others, responsiveness to questions, the applicant’s knowledge about prosthodontics and his/her manual dexterity, will be evaluated.

Acceptance Policies and Procedures

The Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics accepts on average three residents each year into the program. Applications must be completed and returned no later than August 15 of the year prior to the program start date. After preliminary screening of the application packages by the program director, selected candidates will be contacted to schedule a date for an interview. Interviews are usually held in August through October. Taking into account all of the above listed criteria and input obtained by the program director, faculty, and residents, a final decision is made and the selection process completed.
