Dental and Dental Hygiene Programs

The University of Minnesota has the largest enrollment of pre-doctoral dental students in the upper Midwest (96 per class) and is the only dental hygiene program in Minnesota that grants a baccalaureate degree and is affiliated with a dental school (24 students per class). The dental and dental hygiene programs emphasize scientific, scholarly, interpersonal communication and practice management skills required of graduates in a continually changing profession. Teaching methods are tailored to course content and include traditional lectures, small group tutorials, cooperative learning teams, routine laboratories and advanced simulation, clinical practice in a comprehensive care facility and community-based clinical experiences.

Summer Dental School Experience Program

The Summer Dental School Experience offers 20 incoming college sophomores and juniors (applicants must be a college freshmen or sophomore during the 2007-08 school year) an opportunity that will focus on understanding the dental profession, learning more about dental school applications and the DAT, and chart undergraduate coursework toward acceptance into dental school.

Summer Research Fellowship Program

The summer fellowship program provides University of Minnesota School of Dentistry students with the opportunity to do research under the guidance of a faculty mentor. The summer fellowship program provides a great opportunity for qualified students to contribute to the progress of dental and craniofacial research.

Advanced Education and Graduate Programs in Dentistry

Students pursuing advanced training can choose 13 clinical specialty or special focus areas.  For general dentists, specialists and dental hygienists pursuing academic, research and administrative careers, Master's and Ph.D. programs are offered in conjunction with the University of Minnesota Graduate School.    The MinnCResT Program offers fellowship and career development opportunities for graduate students and post-doctorates wishing to begin, continue, or expand their research careers.
