Dental School Preparation Course

The Dental School Preparation Course offered at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry is a 20-hour intensive program designed to prepare students for the field of Dentistry. The program consists of a series of hands-on pre-clinical exercises and laboratory procedures as well as lectures given by university faculty members, experts in their fields of teaching, research and practice. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to work with DentSim®, the multi-million dollar advanced simulation technology and most advanced pre-clinical training tool to date. This intensive weekend course is valuable for students seeking a better understanding of dental school and the profession.

*Each course is limited to 30 right-handed and 2 left-handed students due to equipment availability. Registration is offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.

What is this course about?

This is a university-based dental school preparation course. It is a 2 ½ day (20-hour) program. Students attend lectures and perform dental procedures as one would in dental school.

Who is this for?

This course is designed for high school or college students in a pre-dentistry track with plans to apply to dental school in the future and would like to experience life as a dental student for the weekend. The information and hands-on experience is most appropriate for individuals interested in a dental career as a dentist or a dental therapist. Please note that completion of this course does NOT guarantee acceptance into dental school.

What do we do?

Students attending the course will learn general information about dentistry, including terms, nomenclature, and procedures. Faculty members offer presentations on complete denture fabrication, fixed prosthodontics and implant dentistry. Additionally, students will acquire hands-on experience in cavity preparation, crown preparation, diagnostic impression, cast fabrication, diagnostic wax up, and bleaching tray fabrication. Opportunities are available to tour the dental school facilities and meet with faculty and dental students.

Do I earn credit or proof of attending this course?

You will receive a certificate of completion from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry; however, the course is not eligible for continuing education credit or other university course credit.

When is this course offered?

This course will be offered on the following dates in 2012:
Spring – April 27-29
Summer – July 20-22
Fall – September 7-9
Winter – October 26-28

How much does the course cost?

The total course fee is $525.00. After you register your name and address on Smart Events, a $75.00 non-refundable deposit payable by check to the University of Minnesota is required to hold your reservation. Payment of the non-refundable deposit is due within 2 weeks of registration. Payment of the $450.00 balance payable by check to the University of Minnesota is due 45 days prior to the course start date.

What is the refund policy?

A refund of $450.00 will be issued if you cancel 30 total days prior to the first day of the course. If you cancel less than 30 days but more than 10 days prior to the first day of the course, a refund of $225.00 will be issued. No refunds will be issued if you cancel within 10 days of the course. If you cancel within 10 days of the course due to illness or a family emergency, a refund will not be issued; however, you are welcome to attend the next available course.

Are meals covered?

Refreshments and a light snack will be provided on Friday evening while breakfast and lunch will be provided on Saturday and Sunday. If you have special dietary needs please contact us a minimum of 2 weeks prior to the program start date. Dinner is at the student’s individual discretion and several restaurants within immediate walking distance are available along Washington Avenue.

Yes, parking coupons will be issued to you upon arrival for all 3 days for the Washington Avenue Ramp only.

What should I bring?

Please bring a white lab coat and safety glasses, if you have them. Loaners and disposable gowns will be available, but you may be more comfortable with your personal items.

What do I wear?

Casual clothing is recommended. For safety reasons, we request that you wear full-length pants instead of shorts or skirts. If a skirt is required for religious reasons, it should be full-length and loose fitting. Please wear closed-toe shoes with full coverage, not sandals or open-toe shoes. Lab coats will be worn in addition to your choice of dress. Those with long hair should be prepared to have their hair pinned or pulled back so that it does not interfere with the field of vision or require handling during laboratory procedures.

Where do I stay?

Several hotels are close to the University of Minnesota, East Bank Campus. The Radisson is recommended as it is located across the street from the dental school.
