Application Process

Application deadline (dates have changed):

Complete application materials, including examination results, must be received by November 15, 2009 at 5:00 p.m.  (17:00 hrs.) Central Standard Time to be considered for the class starting in April, 2010 (exact start date to be determined).

The University of Minnesota shall not be held liable for delays caused by the U.S. Postal Service or any courier service.  It is advisable to mail your completed application package by courier service.  Incomplete and/or late applications will not be reviewed.   Any application or parts of an application received past the above date will NOT automatically be entered as an application for the following year

An interview is mandatory if an applicant is invited.  However, to be invited for an interview does not guarantee acceptance to the program.  The day-long interview includes, but is not limited to, presentations, tours of the school, two or three personal interviews, and financial and housing information.  University of Minnesota School of Dentistry does NOT request a bench test for PASS program admissions.

Application requirements for the program:

1. Official transcripts from previous dental education.

Copies of both official transcripts and mark sheets including all courses and grades, and if applicable, results of annual qualifying exams.

Non-English documents must be translated. Translations must be done by an authorized translator.  Both original documents and translations must be submitted with the application.  Originals must be brought in the event of an interview and examined for authenticity.

2. A notarized copy, or an E.C.E. duplicate of the E.C.E. course-by-course evaluation report. 

The documentation must be submitted with the application.  We will not accept documentation submitted directly by the E.C.E. (see FAQ #3)

3. Copy of official diploma/graduation certificate from dental school.

Non-English diplomas must be translated by an official translator.

4. National Dental Board Part I examination.

Part I of the NDB must be taken in the US either as a written test or as a computerized test and within the past 5 years from the deadline of the application period.

5. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) examination.

TOEFL is required for applicants whose first language in country of origin is not English and must have been completed within the past 3 years from the deadline of the application period. Originals or copies are accepted.  Notarized copies are not necessary for the TOEFL results.  For further information and registration materials, contact:

The University of Minnesota School of Dentistry’s TOEFL Institution Code is 6874.

The Internet based test (iBT) is mandatory for the application for the Class of 2012 (application period 4/15/09 – 11/15/09).  We will not accept documentation submitted directly by the testing organization. The iBT average score must be 94 or above and with 20 or above in each of the four evaluations. (see FAQ #3)

6. Application fee.

An application fee of $100.00 must accompany the application.  Make checks or money orders payable to:  University of Minnesota.  Checks must be payable to a U.S. bank.  International Money Orders are also accepted. The applicant’s name MUST be on the check or money order.

7. Passport photo

Include a passport-size photograph of yourself with your application.  Sign and print your name on the back of the photograph.

Applications should be typed or legibly printed in black ink (regular ball point pen). The application must be submitted as a complete package.  Please do not submit documents in separate plastic file folders.  Use a full-size envelope: do not fold the application forms.

The process is rigorous and time consuming.  All applicants will receive an email within 48-72 hours after we have received your application.  Expect 4-6 weeks before you hear from us again (See FAQ # 12 and 20)

American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and CAAPID

ADEA will introduce a centralized application system called CAAPID (Centralized Application for Advanced Placement for International Dentists) on June 8, 2009.

University of Minnesota School of Dentistry is NOT participating in this system in 2009, since our application period starts a couple of months earlier on April 15, 2009 and is open until November 15, 2009.
