Program for Advanced Standing Students (UMN PASS)

Announcements for PASS Class 2013 beginning April 2011 will be available on this website in February of 2010.The University of Minnesota School of Dentistry Program for Advanced Standing Students (UMN PASS) is a program designed for graduates of dental schools outside of the United States (U.S.) and Canada seeking to practice dentistry in the U.S. Most states in the U.S. require a degree (DDS/DMD) from a U.S. accredited dental school and a licensing examination before a license can be issued (for further details on schools accepting graduate training etc. contact ADA or appropriate states’ dental board). The University of Minnesota’s Program for Advanced Standing Students (UMN PASS) will prepare non U.S. or non Canadian trained dentists for this requirement. Successful completion of the two-year program leads to a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree, allowing a successful graduate to seek a license to practice dentistry in any U.S. state. The UMN PASS program is designed to provide a successful integration of students into the profession allowing for a long and successful career. Summer Introductory Program: For approximately 17 weeks in early April to mid-August (exact dates to be determined), UMN PASS students participate in Junior mandatory courses, review previous preclinical lecture material, attend seminars, participate in discussions on adapting to a new culture, and perform a substantial number of pre-clinical laboratory exercises including work on DentSim computerized virtual reality simulators. During this time students also complete rotations in various clinics assisting Senior PASS students. The 17-week introductory course (Dent 6950) is designed to facilitate a smooth transition for UMN PASS students as they merge with the third-year dental students into patient care experiences in September. Integrated Program: After successful completion of the summer course, UMN PASS students are fully integrated into the third-year class. UMN PASS students will participate in all courses and clinical experiences with University of Minnesota dental students as they proceed through their third and fourth years of dental school. UMN PASS students receive the same clinical education as any other student graduating from University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and are similarly eligible and prepared to sit for the regional board examination or any state/regional examination of their choice.
