Masters Degree in Dental Hygiene
Fast Facts The University of Minnesota awards a Masters Degree of Dental Hygiene.- The program begins each summer (May) with the option of full or part-time enrollment. Enrollment is limited in order to provide graduate students adequate faculty support.
- The program is housed within the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. The School of Dentistry, which is a school within the University of Minnesota Academic Health Center provides a research intensive environment as well as inter-professional opportunities that are ideal for preparing dental hygienists for careers in the health care industry as well as for dental hygiene education.
- Students may pursue one of the two tracks: dental hygiene education or management. The management track curriculum is offered in collaboration with the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.
- The Division of Dental Hygiene has scholarship opportunities for graduate students. The American Dental Hygienists Association and the American Dental Education Association also provide scholarship opportunities for graduate students.
Program Overview The Master of Dental Hygiene program prepares leaders in the profession for research, the healthcare industry and academia. The curriculum provides meaningful academic experiences for each graduate student based on his/her career goals and interest. Courses in the management track provide students with knowledge and skills necessary for positions within the healthcare industry such as sales representatives, managers of marketing and professional relations divisions, managers of large dental clinics, practice management consultants and entrepreneurs. Courses in the dental hygiene education track provide students with the knowledge and skills to teach didactic, clinic and laboratory courses in dental hygiene programs, conduct research, and assume administrative positions. Prospective applicants are invited to to attend a Master of Dental Hygiene Program Information session. The following sessions are scheduled for 2009-2010: Septmber 17, 6:30-7:30 p.m.; October 20, 6:30-7:30 p.m.; November 19, 6:30-7:30 p.m.; December 7, 6:30-7:30 p.m.; January 21, 6:30-7:30 p.m.; February 9, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Sessions include information about the program and individual advising.
