Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Goals of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Training Program

  • To train individuals within an ethical and service based framework to be thoroughly competent in all phases of the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
  • To provide opportunities to interface and collaborate with our dental and medical colleagues both locally and abroad.
  • To provide experience in research to allow a better appreciation for the scientific bases of the specialty and biomedical sciences.

History of the Training Program

Formal training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Minnesota has existed since 1946. Over 130 oral and maxillofacial surgeons have successfully completed the requirements for certification in the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery. The alumni of the University of Minnesota’s Advanced Training Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery are prominent and recognized professionals. The program continues to maintain the strong tradition of training individuals for a multitude of reasons. A graduate of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Training Program at the University of Minnesota is well trained in the full-scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Additional training is available for those interested in academic pursuits for advanced degrees and research methodology.

The training program is a full-time 48 month program. The program includes didactic courses and clinical exposure to topics related to the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery. The course of study is organized to allow the student to work closely with the full and part-time faculty at the primary and affiliate hospitals. The resident will acquire the skills necessary to assume positions of increasing responsibility in the medical and surgical care of the OMS patient.
