Description
The Advanced Specialty Education Program in Pediatric Dentistry is fully-accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation. Completion of the 24-month program qualifies an individual to limit his/her practice to the specialty of pediatric dentistry and to apply for the qualifying examination of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Graduates earn a certificate in pediatric dentistry and may concurrently pursue an advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) through the Graduate School.. A Ph.D. program in a basic science area combined with a clinical certificate in pediatric dentistry is offered for individuals seeking extensive academic and research training.

In order to complete the graduate / residency program in pediatric dentistry, a student must:

  1. Complete all clinical assignments and patient treatment and residency seminars to the satisfaction of the faculty of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry.
  2. If a Master's degree is desired and residents are cleared for pursuing this advanced degree, additional expectations must be met:

  3. Meet the requirements for obtaining a Master's degree, as specified by the Graduate School of the University of Minnesota.
  4. Complete an original research project including oral defense and submission of a thesis, within the time limits of the formal graduate program.
  5. Complete all minor-subject course requirements according to the discipline in which the minor is taken.

The program consists essentially of four areas of study: clinical practice, research, didactic education, and teaching. In a typical week the student should expect to spend 6 half-days in clinical practice, 1 half-day devoted to research, 1 half-day in didactic education and 1 half-days teaching. With faculty approval, the emphasis placed on each of these areas can be modified depending on student interest.

Curriculum
Scheduled seminars are designed to provide the student with extensive knowledge of pediatric dentistry literature and topics related to the health of children. Topic areas included are physical growth and development of children, speech and language development, behavior management techniques, preventive procedures, -facial growth and development, orthodontic diagnosis and treatment, hospital procedures and pediatric oral surgery.

Weekly treatment planning seminars provide an opportunity for faculty-student exchange regarding treatment alternatives for a variety of clinical problems.

Clinical treatment of a wide variety of pediatric dentistry patients is accomplished in the graduate clinic. Experience in treatment of patients utilizing general anesthesia is obtained at two University- affiliated hospitals.

Facilities
The majority of the program activities are carried out in Moos Health Sciences Tower. This building, occupied in 1974, houses the School of Dentistry, lecture rooms and offices for some departments of the School of Medicine.

The Division of Pediatric Dentistry has a 16-chair dental student clinic, an 8-chair advanced education student clinic, a library-seminar room, research laboratory and an audiovisual room. Two individual treatment rooms, one equipped with a one-way observation window, are located adjacent to the graduate clinic. Each advanced education student is provided with a desk and filing space.

Treatment for special needs and medically-compromised patients is performed in the outpatient dental clinic at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinics. The hospital's operating rooms are used for treatment of patients requiring general anesthesia.

The advanced education program also utilizes a two-chair pediatric dentistry clinic at Hennepin County Medical Center. This facility, occupied in 1976, provides the student with extensive clinical experience in all phases of pediatric dentistry.

Program Stipend and Tuition
First-year stipend is approximately $6,000.
Second-year stipend is approximately $8,000.
Tuition and instrument fees for most students are approximately $5,000.

Admission Requirements
Applicants to the program must possess the DDS or DMD degree.

The completed application form, along with any other requested information, must be received by the PASS system on or before the specified deadline. Applicants are evaluated on the basis of their class standing, grade transcripts and letters of reference.
