Programs and Student Admissions
Doctor of Dental Surgery Program The University of Minnesota has the largest enrollment of pre-doctoral dental students in the upper Midwest (96 students per class). The dental program emphasizes scientific, scholarly, interpersonal communication and practice management skills required of graduates in a continually changing profession. Teaching methods are tailored to course content and include traditional lectures, small group tutorials, cooperative learning teams, routine laboratories and advanced simulation, clinical practice in a comprehensive care facility and community-based clinical experiences. Dental Hygiene Programs The University of Minnesota has the only dental hygiene program in Minnesota that grants a baccalaureate degree and is affiliated with a dental school (24 students per class). Dental Therapy Programs In 2009, the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry became the first dental school in the nation to create an educational program for dental therapists. The dental therapist is a licensed oral health professional who practices as part of the dental team to provide education, clinical and therapeutic services to patients. Dental therapists provide basic preventive and restorative treatment to children and adults, and extractions of primary (baby) teeth, under supervision by a dentist. Dental therapists work primarily in dental offices and in community settings that serve low-income and underserved patients or in a dental health professional shortage area. Program for Advanced Standing Students (UMN PASS) The University of Minnesota School of Dentistry Program for Advanced Standing Students (UMN PASS) is a program designed for graduates of dental schools outside of the United States (U.S.) and Canada seeking to practice dentistry in the U.S. Advanced Education and Graduate Programs in Dentistry Students pursuing advanced training can choose 13 clinical specialty or special focus areas. For general dentists, specialists and dental hygienists pursuing academic, research and administrative careers, Master's and Ph.D. programs are offered in conjunction with the University of Minnesota Graduate School. The MinnCResT Program offers fellowship and career development opportunities for graduate students and post-doctorates wishing to begin, continue, or expand their research careers. Dental School Preparation Course The Dental School Preparation Course offered at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry is a 20-hour intensive program designed to prepare students for the field of Dentistry. The program consists of a series of hands-on pre-clinical exercises and laboratory procedures as well as lectures given by university faculty members, experts in their fields of teaching, research and practice. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to work with DentSim®, the multi-million dollar advanced simulation technology and most advanced pre-clinical training tool to date. This intensive weekend course is valuable for students seeking a better understanding of dental school and the profession. *Each course is limited to 30 right-handed and 2 left-handed students due to equipment availability. Registration is offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.
