Since joining the faculty in 1970, Dr. Born has served as principal investigator or co-investigator on numerous research, training, and development projects, with funding in excess of several millions of dollars. Of particular note is work accomplished in the 1970s and 1980s in which he and his team of information specialists developed a computerized placement service with curricular support which dramatically impacted workforce distribution in Minnesota. The ADA and Kellogg Foundation subsequently expanded the system to serve the entire nation, and regionally, some 23 health professions adopted the model. Much of his other work has focused on workforce issues and he has most recently been involved in a study of dental hygiene career dynamics with a colleague in the School. Rural health care is a high priority in his work. He continues to explore workforce supply and distribution issues and is particularly concerned with access to care and health disparities.

Professor Born frequently teaches and coordinates coursework centered on dental public health and oral health care delivery. He often advises and works with graduate students from throughout the School, and provides graduate coursework in the areas of teaching and evaluation.

Dr. Born has served in a variety of positions in the School, including that of interim Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Head of the Division of Health Ecology. For many years he was the School's Code of Conduct officer and has served campus wide on numerous grievance, judicial, and grievance oversight committees. From 1993-1996, he also served as Chair of the Department of American Indian Studies in the University's College of Liberal Arts.
