You Will Learn

Day One

Facial and smile esthetic principles follow a set of logical and mathematical patterns - combined with some degree of artistic interpretation. This session will provide a visual journey utilizing hundreds of observations from treated orthodontic cases along with their esthetic outcomes. Expand your knowledge of advanced technologies in orthodontics, bone and tooth movement, and discover what is possible in esthetic enhancement increasing your confidence and skills as an esthetic diagnostician. New core foundational practices will emerge enabling you to make long-term decisions in partnerships with patients.

    • Define macro, mini, and micro esthetics
    • Discuss treated cases and outcomes
    • Examine altering smile and facial esthetics: what is possible?
    • Explore introduction to tooth movement: theory and cases
    • Discuss enhancing esthetics with advanced technology and outcomes
    • Review case studies: treatment and outcomes

Day Two

Use principles examined on day one to focus on child and adolescent patients. Gain current insights on growth and development, informed consent for minors, and caring for patients with disabilities. In addition, updated trends in diagnosis and interdisciplinary care, referral recommendations, pediatric dental behavior management, and steps to prepare for an international dental service mission will be discussed.

Meet Our Experts

James Miller, DDS, MS, Board Certified (ABO) orthodontist, Advances in Orthodontics, Golden Valley, MN; Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor, Division of Orthodontics, University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. Dr. Miller founded the Faculty Practice at the University of Minnesota in 2006 which is a critical access provider clinic to an underserved patient population. He has given over 60 invited lecture presentations locally, regionally, and nationally and has authored original research in orthodontics, dentistry, social sciences, microbiology, and bone biology.

Adena Borodkin, DDS, MS, provides care to children at Golden Valley Kids in Golden Valley, MN. She received her education from the University of Manitoba and pursued her dental degree at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Borodkin completed her pediatric dentistry residency at the University of MN in 2006 and published her research on dental development in children with cleft lip and palate in 2007.  She is active with the Minnesota Dental Association, the Give Kids a Smile Day Program, and the national and Minnesota chapters of the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Borodkin is a diplomate, American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.  She lives in Edina with her husband and 4 young kids.


  • Final registration will begin at 7:00 AM on Saturday.
  • Continental breakfast will be available during registration both days.
  • The program will run from 7:30 AM to 10:45 AM (both days).

What to wear

We suggest that you bring a jacket or sweater to help you adjust to the seemingly inevitable changes in meeting room temperature.

Refund policy

A full refund will be issued if you cancel at least one week (five working days) before the program. If you cancel less than one week prior to the program, a $50 processing fee will be deducted from your refund. For registrations charged to your credit card the refund will be credited to your account. No cash refunds will be issued on charged registrations.

  • Taking a guided tour of Glensheen Mansion—the historic Congdon estate—a 39-room Jacobean revival mansion that is Minnesota’s premier historic house museum. Completed in 1908, with mostly original furnishings and original design, it gives a fascinating look at life in an affluent family at the turn of the last century—listed in the National Registrar of Historic Places.
