UMN School of Dentistry DDS students
Why hire UMN Doctor of Dental Surgery graduates? Dentists graduating from the University of Minnesota are a cut above the rest. Here are a few of the many reasons employers are excited to hire a Golden Gopher grad:
Our graduates are team-oriented super stars. UMN student dentists have the unique opportunity to work alongside dental therapy students in addition to dental hygiene students, collaborate with advanced dental specialists and dental assistants, and have access to the University’s Academic Health Center for interprofessional collaboration with pharmacists, doctors, nurses and other allied and public health professionals, all to prepare them for providing exceptional patient-centered care.
Our graduates serve the community as a point of pride. Our in-house clinics have earned Angie’s List Super Service Award for exemplary service. Students participate in community outreach 6-8 weeks of their education at locations spanning three states, and can do a dental externship through a partnership with the Indian Health Service. Many students provide volunteer services to patients through Give Kids a Smile Day, Mission of Mercy, Union Gospel Mission, or service trips to Guatemala.
Our graduates are professional leaders. First in the nation to become full members of their state professional association, our students comprise the 8th District Dental Society of the Minnesota Dental Association (MDA). Many additional student-led groups are active on campus, offering abundant opportunities for leadership in the profession.
Our graduates learn from world-class researchers and educators. We are home of the ADEA Gies-award winning Minnesota Dental Research Center for Biomaterials and Biomechanics (MDRCBB) and several other research labs devoted to basic, clinical, and behavioral sciences, investigating everything from neuroscience to oral health disparities. Our research team helps bring the latest discoveries into our classrooms, clinics and dental practices statewide, and students contribute to the knowledge base through the competitive Summer Dental Research Program.
Our graduates don’t settle for good. They strive for excellence. The clinical curriculum requires that students continue to participate in clinical experiences to enhance their skills, even after demonstrating competency in the procedures. We offer several honors courses for those who have a special interest in a particular discipline. Students are encouraged to begin participating in Continuing Dental Education courses beginning in their senior year, as a commitment to lifelong learning.
