13th Annual Dental Research Day
About 300 community practitioners, students, staff, and faculty attended the dental school’s 13th annual Research Day on March 10.
Faculty presenters included Grishondra Branch-Mays, DDS, MS, who presented “An Interprofessional, Educational, and Collaborative Practice Model between Dentistry and Pharmacy”; Mark Herzberg, DDS, PhD, who discussed “Head and Neck Cancer: Connecting an Antimicrobial Protein to Tumor Suppression; Scott B. McClanahan, DDS, MS, who provided “Updates in Endodontic Research from the Division of Endodontics”. Vladimir Leon-Salazar, DDS, MSD, discussed questions about “To Treat or Not to Treat: The Occlusal Dilemma in Patients with TMD”; and Alex Fok, PhD, MSc, shared his research on “Debonding of Composite Restorations: A Race Between Shrinkage Stress and Bond Formation.”
Highlights of the day included the awarding of Paper of the Year Awards to School of Dentistry faculty, student poster presentations, and a keynote address by Brad A. Amendt, PhD.,Director of the Craniofacial Anomalies Center at the University of Iowa. Dr. Amendt discussed local delivery of microRNAs and microRNA inhibitors in promoting osteogenesis and modulating local inflammation.
Congratulations Paper of the Year award winners!
The following faculty members were named recipients of the 2016 School of Dentistry Paper of the Year Award. The award recognizes contributions made to the breadth of scholarship at the School of Dentistry in the areas of basic and clinical sciences, and in social/behavioral sciences and public health.
- Basic Science: P.D. Bittner-Eddy Ph.D. and M. Costalonga (Developmental/Surgical Sci) for their paper (with L.A. Fischer and D.H. Kaplan, K. Thieu) “Mucosal Langerhans Cells Promote Differentiation of Th17 Cells in a Murine Model of Periodontitis But Are Not Required for Porphyromonas gingivalis –Drivel Alveolar Bone Destruction”. The paper was printed in the Journal of Immunology, 2016 August 15: 197(4):1435-46.
- Clinical Science: Don Nixdorf for his paper (with A.S. Law, K. Lindquist, G.J. Reams, E. Cole, K. Kanter, R.H.N. Nguyen, D.R. Harris, and the National Dental PBRN Collaborative Group) for the article “Frequency, impact and predictors of persistent pain after room canal treatment: a national dental PBRN study”. The paper was printed in PAIN. January 2017: 157(1):159-165.
- Social and Behavioral Science & Public Health: Karin Quick for her paper “The Role of Self– and Peer Assessment in Dental Students’ Reflective Practice Using Standardized Patient Encounters”. The paper was printed in Journal of Dental Education. August 2016: 80(8):924-929.
