School of Dentistry receives $144K Clinical Dental Education Innovations grant

The Minnesota Department of Health has awarded the School of Dentistry an 18-month, $144,802 grant to improve access to and quality of oral health care for Minnesota's underserved, limited English proficiency population by developing oral health care providers' capability to work with trained interpreters. Project objectives are to formally train dental, dental hygiene, and dental therapy students to work with interpreters, increase the number of limited English proficiency patients successfully served by students, and increase the number of trained interpreters who are experienced working with dental, dental hygiene, and dental therapy students. Karin Quick, PhD, DDS (Primary Dental Care-Dental Public Health) will serve as project director. Project partners include Century College's Language Translating and Interpreting (TRIN) Program, the University of Minnesota Interprofessional Education and Resource Center (IERC), and Academic Health Center (AHC) Simulation Center. The project will run from July 1, 2016 - December 31, 2017.
