School of Dentistry Chainbreaker team

The University of Minnesota School of Dentistry helped raise more than $86,000 for cancer research at the University of Minnesota Masonic Cancer Center at the Chainbreaker bicycle ride on August 11-13.

The School of Dentistry Peloton featured 73 riders and the Lytic Cycles had 13 riders for the trip through Minnesota. More than 30 School of Dentistry volunteers anchored two rest stops, registration tables and helped in many other capacities throughout the weekend.

Opioid pill

The University of Minnesota School of Dentistry is the first in the nation to mandate new guidelines for prescribing opioid painkillers in its clinics. Three School of Dentistry students will receive the University's prestigious President's Student Leadership and Service Award .

Hannah Afwerke (D3), Alejandro Cisneros (D2), and Aaron Henderson (D3) will receive their awards at a recognition banquet in the Fall of 2017.

The President's Student Leadership and Service Award is presented to about one-half of one percent of the student body and recognizes the student's accomplishments and contributions of outstanding student leadership at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus.

 

Nelson Rhodus

Nelson L. Rhodus, DMD, MPH, a School of Dentistry professor in the Department of Diagnostic and Biological Sciences, was recently awarded a Fellowship in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Rhodus is a Distinguished Professor and Director of the Division of Oral Medicine, Oral Diagnosis and Radiology.

Stephen K. Shuman

Congratulations to Stephen K. Shuman, DDS, MS, who received the School of Dentistry's 2016 Century Club Professor of the Year Award. The award is the school's highest honor and is given annually in recognition of significant contributions to the school in the areas of education, research and service. Dr.
