Gary C. Anderson, DDS, MS, a tenured faculty member in the Department of Developmental and Surgical Sciences, Division of Pediatric Dentistry, has been named interim dean of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, effective November 21, 2016. His appointment follows the departure of Leon Assael, DMD, who retired from his position as dean in August. Anderson currently directs the School of Dentistry’s Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies Clinic.
Jeffery M. Karp, DDS, MS (Developmental/Surg Sci-Pediatric Dentistry) is a member of a three-person interdisciplinary team named by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation® to participate in its new Clinical Scholars Program. The three-year national leadership program brings together 30 innovative clinicians from different fields/specialties to tackle complex health problems.
University President Eric W. Kaler and Mrs. Karen Kaler were among the more than 500 fairgoers who stopped by the School of Dentistry's booth at the Minnesota State Fair on August 26. The exhibit featured activities that promote the school's patient clinics and research expertise, and advance awareness of oral health as an integral component of health and wellbeing.
First-year dental, dental therapy and dental hygiene students were welcomed to the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry on September 16, 2016, at Northrop Auditorium at a White Coat Ceremony.

The University of Minnesota Provost’s Office has appointed Todd Thierer, D.M.D., M.P.H., to serve as acting dean of the School of Dentistry.
Executive Vice President and Provost Karen Hanson announced the appointment on Wednesday, August 29, at a meeting with School of Dentistry staff and faculty. Thierer, whose term as acting dean became effective August 31, replaces the retiring Leon Assael, D.M.D. Thierer currently serves as associate professor and associate dean for clinical affairs.
The Minnesota Department of Health has awarded the School of Dentistry an 18-month, $144,802 grant to improve access to and quality of oral health care for Minnesota's underserved, limited English proficiency population by developing oral health care providers' capability to work with trained interpreters.
The Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation has awarded the University of Minnesota Foundation (on behalf of the School of Dentistry) a grant of $1,000,000, payable over three years, to fund the UCare Mobile Dental Clinic.
MRI technology is not commonly found in a dental practice. But findings from a proof of concept study posted online in advance of publication by DentoMaxillofacial Radiology report that MRI technology can help dentists identify microrcracks in teeth and allow for intervention before significant damage is done.
LeadingAge National named the Walker Methodist Health Center Dental Clinic as the recipient of its 2016 Innovations Award. LeadingAge is the national organization of 6,000+ not-for-profit organizations representing the entire field of aging services, including 38 state partners. The award will be presented in October at the organization's annual meeting.
