Conrado Aparicio, PhD, MScEng (Restorative Sci-Biomaterials) and Robert Jones, PhD, DDS (Developmental/Surg Sci- Pediatric Dentistry) have been awarded a two-year subcontract from TDA Research (Wheat Ridge, CO) to collaborate on the development of a novel, long-term stable dental resin polymer system for initial use to improve dental sealants and, later, restorative materials.
University of Minnesota School of Dentistry bicyclists and volunteers turned out in force Saturday, August 11, to raise funds to support cancer research at the Masonic Cancer Center. The August 10-12 Chainbreaker bike-a-thon rallied more than 1,000 riders from throughout the University and community, including 78 from the School of Dentistry who rode in two pelotons/teams – Lytic Cycles and School of Dentistry – with each rider completing 25, 50, 100 or 180-mile routes. The University of Minnesota School of Dentistry held its 129th Commencement Ceremony in Northrop Memorial Auditorium on May 11. Included among the graduates were 115 new doctors of dental surgery, 36 recipients of advanced education degrees (master and PhD) and/or certificates, 7 dental therapists who received master's degrees, and 33 dental hygienists (27 who received a bachelor of science degree and 6 who earned a master of dental hygiene degree).
Brent E. Larson, DDS, MS, University of Minnesota School of Dentistry Professor and Director of the Division of Orthodontics, received the 2017 Century Club Professor of the Year award. The Century Club Professor of the Year is the School of Dentistry’s highest honor and is awarded each year to a faculty member in recognition of outstanding contributions to the School of Dentistry in the areas of education, service and research.

University of Minnesota researchers in the Institute for Molecular Virology (IMV) have made a key discovery that could have important implications for developing a strategy to stop the spread of a highly infectious virus currently spreading among remote areas of central Australia. Called human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1), infection rates are reportedly exceeding 40 percent among adults in those communitites. HTLV-1, the first human cancer virus discovered, can cause leukemia and lymphoma.
