Three School of Dentistry students will receive the University's prestigious President's Student Leadership and Service Award .
Hannah Afwerke (D3), Alejandro Cisneros (D2), and Aaron Henderson (D3) will receive their awards at a recognition banquet in the Fall of 2017.
The President's Student Leadership and Service Award is presented to about one-half of one percent of the student body and recognizes the student's accomplishments and contributions of outstanding student leadership at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus.
Nelson L. Rhodus, DMD, MPH, a School of Dentistry professor in the Department of Diagnostic and Biological Sciences, was recently awarded a Fellowship in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Rhodus is a Distinguished Professor and Director of the Division of Oral Medicine, Oral Diagnosis and Radiology.
Congratulations to Stephen K. Shuman, DDS, MS, who received the School of Dentistry's 2016 Century Club Professor of the Year Award. The award is the school's highest honor and is given annually in recognition of significant contributions to the school in the areas of education, research and service. Dr.
Leon A. Assael, DMD, a professor at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, was named Chair of the 2017-2018 ADEA Board of Directors during the meeting of the ADEA House of Delegates in Long Beach, California, in March 2017.
Assael served as School of Dentistry Dean from 2012 to 2016.
Shelley N. Grimes, PhD, an associate professor in the Department of Diagnostic and Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, passed away on March 20. She was 54.

The University of Minnesota School of Dentistry welcomed Dumas Ting, CEO of China-based Golden Meditech Insurance Group, to the University of Minnesota Pediatric Dental Clinic, Made Possible by Delta Dental of Minnesota on February 9. Ting was in Minneapolis to learn more about the clinic operations and the public-private partnership between the University and Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation that helped launch the clinic in 2012.
The Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation awarded a one-year $100,000 (renewal) grant to the Native American Community Clinic (NACC) Dental Clinic to increase access to oral health care for Native American children in the clinic's service area.
Rice Health Foundation (RHF) raised $218,000 to support the Rice Regional Dental Clinic in Willmar. Launched in 2007, the clinic serves patients from 17 rural counties and is staffed year-round by University of MInnesota School of Dentistry students and residents. To date, some 640 dental, dental therapy and dental hygiene students, along with 23 pediatric dentistry residents, have completed rotations at the clinic and provided care for more than 13,000 patients.
