The Minnesota Department of Health has awarded the School of Dentistry an 18-month, $144,802 grant to improve access to and quality of oral health care for Minnesota's underserved, limited English proficiency population by developing oral health care providers' capability to work with trained interpreters.
The Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation has awarded the University of Minnesota Foundation (on behalf of the School of Dentistry) a grant of $1,000,000, payable over three years, to fund the UCare Mobile Dental Clinic.
Leon Assael, D.M.D., will retire as dean of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry by the end of the 2016-17 academic year.
Students, family, friends, faculty and staff gathered on May 13 to celebrate the accomplishments of our students at the School of Dentistry's 127th Commencement Ceremony held at Northrop Memorial Auditorium. A total of 177 candidates were recognized: Doctor of dental surgery (109); Advanced dentistry education and oral biology programs (38); Master of dental therapy (6); Master of science in dental hygiene (3); and Bachelor of science in dental hygiene (24).

Kimberly Johnson is a ‘can do’ and ‘will do' educator, clinician, researcher and volunteer whose commitment to professionalism serves as an example to those who know her.
A three-time graduate of the University of Minnesota, Johnson is an alumna of the School of Dentistry GDA, BS and Master’s degree programs in dental hygiene.
Jorge Perdigão, DMD, MS, PhD, was named the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry's 2015 Century Club Professor of the Year on April 29, 2015. The award is the school’s highest honor and is presented annually to one faculty member in recognition of outstanding service as a teacher and for significant contributions to the education, research and service mission of the school. The award was presented at the dental school's Celebrating Dentistry reception at the St.
Dr. Louis B. Sullivan, former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, visited the School of Dentistry on April 14 to meet with dental therapy students and educators and tour the school's team care clinic. The visit followed his testimony on April 13 before the North Dakota interim Health Services Committee about the importance of dental care and overall health, dentist workforce shortages in that state, and the licensure of dental therapists to enhance patient access to care.
The William J. Gies Foundation has named the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities, and the Minnesota Board of Dentistry, as recipients of the 2016 ADEAGies Award for Vision by a Public or Private Partner, in recognition of their combined efforts to develop dental therapy education in Minnesota.
