Feigal Symposium - This image was taken prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. All safety protocols remain in place in our clinics.

An upcoming Continuing Dental Education symposium will provide insights into essential issues in pediatric dentistry, including caring for special needs and LGBTQ+ young people.

The Robert J. Feigal Lectureship in Pediatric Dentistry, created in 2006, will take place September 17, 2021, with an in-person and Zoom option. The funded lectureship seeks to honor the active creative dialogue Fiegal, a pediatric dentist for 30 years, sought out among thoughtful people.

A Message from the Dean

Grant Dye, DDS - A day in the life

Grant Dye, DDS ’21, graduated this year with his dentistry degree. But before he ventured into the world of practicing dentistry, he took us on a journey via Instagram to show us what it’s like to be a DDS student at the University of Minnesota.

Dye shared that his day usually starts with a trip to the Recreation Center on campus, before heading to Moos Tower for a day of clinical work.

Researching the spread of COVID-19

A collaborative effort between University of Minnesota researchers and clinicians made a real-life, immediate impact on patient care and safety amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Without this expertise, I don’t believe our clinics would have opened up as soon as they did,” said Paul Olin, DDS, MS, Interim Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Minnesota, of the project.

Teledentistry

In March 2020, as the United States scrambled to lock down and slow the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak, routine dental work slowed to a halt. Unable to keep up with needed PPE and in response to executive orders preventing non-emergent care, Minnesota dentists couldn’t see their patients. Revenue stopped -- and yet, toothaches and mouth sores and questions of “is this normal?” continued.

How could patients receive the care they needed without wasting time and money in the emergency room?
