The School of Dentistry’s 17th Research Day required innovation, creative thinking, and adaptability to pull off—and those same traits quickly became themes of the day’s presentations.
An oral health professional completes a procedure flawlessly. They’ve checked every box, completed every necessary step, and are proud of their work. Satisfied, they turn to switch on the red light that tells their instructor they’re ready for a check—and it’s not there.

University of Minnesota School of Dentistry bicyclists and volunteers turned out in force Saturday, August 11, to raise funds to support cancer research at the Masonic Cancer Center. The August 10-12 Chainbreaker bike-a-thon rallied more than 1,000 riders from throughout the University and community, including 78 from the School of Dentistry who rode in two pelotons/teams – Lytic Cycles and School of Dentistry – with each rider completing 25, 50, 100 or 180-mile routes. On February 10, 2018, more than 450 volunteers - including dental, dental therapy and dental hygiene students and faculty, staff and residents from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry as well as outside licensed providers, pre-dent and interprofessional students - helped 197 kids at Give Kids a Smile.
The annual volunteer-run event helps connect children in need to the health care system and to the U-M Dental Clinics as their dental home.
