Nelson L. Rhodus, DMD, MPH, a School of Dentistry professor in the Department of Diagnostic and Biological Sciences, was recently awarded a Fellowship in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Rhodus is a Distinguished Professor and Director of the Division of Oral Medicine, Oral Diagnosis and Radiology.
Congratulations to Stephen K. Shuman, DDS, MS, who received the School of Dentistry's 2016 Century Club Professor of the Year Award. The award is the school's highest honor and is given annually in recognition of significant contributions to the school in the areas of education, research and service. Dr.
Leon A. Assael, DMD, a professor at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, was named Chair of the 2017-2018 ADEA Board of Directors during the meeting of the ADEA House of Delegates in Long Beach, California, in March 2017.
Assael served as School of Dentistry Dean from 2012 to 2016.
Shelley N. Grimes, PhD, an associate professor in the Department of Diagnostic and Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, passed away on March 20. She was 54.

Stephen Shuman, DDS, MS, an Associate Professor in the Department of Primary Dental Care and the Oral Health Services for Older Adults Graduate Program, and the Walker Methodist Health Center in Minneapolis were recently honored with the 2016 Innovation Award from LeadingAge, the national association of more than 6,000 nonprofits representing the entire field of aging services and dedicated to expanding possibilities and advocacy for the aging.

Gary C. Anderson, DDS, MS, a tenured faculty member in the Department of Developmental and Surgical Sciences, Division of Pediatric Dentistry, has been named interim dean of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, effective November 21, 2016. His appointment follows the departure of Leon Assael, DMD, who retired from his position as dean in August. Anderson currently directs the School of Dentistry’s Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies Clinic.
