School of Dentistry Open House: Explore Dental Careers

The Office of Admissions and Diversity is holding the School of Dentistry Open House: Explore Dental Careers for high school and college students on Saturday, May 19, 2018. Programming for high school students will be from 8:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. and college students will attend in the afternoon from 12:00 - 5:00 p.m. Activities for both groups include hands-on dental simulations, information sessions, and an opportunity to connect with current students, faculty and staff in our dental hygiene (BSDH), dental therapy (BSDH/MDT), and dentistry (DDS) programs. Lunch will be provided for all participants. 

Registration for this event closed on May 5. 

High School Student Information

Thank you for your registration to the Open House: Explore Dental Careers hosted by the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry on Saturday, May 19, 2018 @ 8:00am-1:30pm. Take a minute to carefully review the information below as there are action items you must complete to be eligible to attend.

1) Please confirm that you are still able to attend the Open House: Explore Dental Careers from 8:00am-1:30pm by replying via email to Chris Held (cheld@umn.edu) by May 14. If one or more of your parents or guardians will be attending with you, confirm their attendance (via email) by providing us with their title (i.e. Dr., Mr., Mrs., etc.) and full (first, last) name. See the agenda for parent(s)/guardian(s) during the Open House – share this with your parent(s)/guardian(s) so they know what their schedule will be.

2)  Parental permission form
This form must be signed by a parent or guardian in order for you to be eligible to participate in this event. Your options for turning in this required form are:

  1. Have your parent or guardian print, sign, and scan the form – send via email to cheld@umn.edu (preferred)
  2. Have your parent or guardian print, sign, and take a photo of the signed form – send via email to cheld@umn.edu (preferred)
  3. Bring the signed form to the Open House
  4. Have your parent or guardian sign the form at the Open House if they are attending with you.

3)  Photo release form
Your parent or guardian must also sign this form. Your options for turning in this form are:

  1. Have your parent or guardian print, sign, and scan the form – send via email to cheld@umn.edu (preferred)
  2. Have your parent or guardian print, sign, and take a photo of the signed form – send via email to cheld@umn.edu (preferred)
  3. Bring the signed form to the Open House
  4. Have your parent or guardian sign the form at the Open House if they are attending with you.

High School Student Schedule

  • 8:00-8:45am: Check in at Moos Tower 3-110 (third floor, room 110) http://campusmaps.umn.edu/malcolm-moos-health-sciences-tower
  • 8:45-9:00am: Introduction and overview of the schedule
  • 9-9:30am: Speaker Panel (Dentist, Dental Therapist, Dental Hygienist)
  • 9:30-9:45am: Break into assigned groups and meet assigned group leader at specified location
  • 9:45-10:15am: Station 1*
  • 10:15-10:30am: Break - walk to next activity with group leader
  • 10:30-11:00am: Station 2*
  • 11:00-11:15am: Break - walk to next activity with group leader
  • 11:15-11:45am: Station 3*
  • 11:45am-12:00pm: Break - walk to next activity with group leader
  • 12:00-12:30pm: Station 4*
  • 12:30-12:45pm: Break - walk to lunch with group leader
  • 12:45-1:30pm: Lunch with current students (Dental, Dental Therapy, Dental Hygiene) in 1-451 (1st floor, room 451)
  • 1:30pm: Depart

*Stations include: pre-clinical, clinical, research, and classroom focused activities

Appropriate attire includes: pants with no holes or rips, a clean top that fully covers your torso, and closed toed shoes are required. Please do not wear a hat, sunglasses, sandals or other opened toed shoes, and/or shorts or skirts. Remember - Personal hygiene is important.

Construction notice: Starting immediately after finals (Saturday, May 12), the North Stairwell on Washington Avenue will begin construction. They will be walling off the entrance and putting a perimeter fence around the area. Loud noises/jackhammering will begin Monday, May 14.
